From the terms you can buy it anywhere, just that your first time using the card has to be a purchase of $349+ in order to get the 200 credit.

To qualify for this offer, you must apply for your new Sony Card by 3/14/09. When first single sales receipt purchase is made equal or greater than $349 within 45 days of Sony Card account open will automatically qualify customer for $200 Statement Credit. Statement Credit will be posted to their Sony Card Statement within 8-12 weeks from Qualifying Purchase (first purchase does not include balance transfer or balance transfer checks) account must be open and not in default at the time of fulfillment.

also

... Additional purchases with this account cannot be made until your card is received in the mail. This promotional offer is available for new Sony Card account holders only; existing Sony Card account holders or accounts are not eligible. See Pricing and Terms.

so you can't use it in paypal til you got your card.

You can only use is at the Sony site until you actually have it in hand to activate it.

Thanks for the input!

wierd.
its possible you wont be approved at all actually.

with the credit crisis and all and some card copmanies paying people to close their accounts (amex did this) , they are not going to approve you unless you have good credit.
Card companies only want sure fire users of cards now apparently so unless jp morgan chase is insane, they probably have some higher standards for card approval.

Where does it say that?

Last time I did this deal with a friend, it worked perfectly buying from a different site.

Yeah, for the love of god, someone answer the $64,000 question. Can the purchase be made elsewhere or not? I don't want to take the risk for $ 200.....

Edit: Jeez, I just read the page pretty carefully. I don't see anywhere it states that the purchase must be made at Sony......

I have great credit..>700

Yes, it can be made at another place. It has to be a single puchase > $349! You just can't buy it somewhere else till you get the card.

I put down my apartment as my address since I've been living here for over 2 years for school. I put down the rent.

Hmm, not to be argumentative - just to add to the debate, but I was instantly approved (700 + credit as well) and I've got 5,000 limit, my CVV number instantly and the actual card number as well. Shouldn't I be able to use this right now..... or did you mean in store when you say "buy it somewhere else"?

Also sure enough on the conditions, under APR it says qualifying purchases made at Sony.com or Sonystyle..... Is that just referring to the APR I take it and not the promotion itself?

The # and cvv # only works at sony.com/sonystyle right now. If you try to use it somewhere else right now, it will be rejected.

You'll only get 0% apr on purchases made at sony/sonystyle.com. The promotion will work anywhere, but u just want get 0%

Oh, thanks. So when will it work at "other places" lol? Because once I get the physical card, the information is going to be the same. Now I'm confused again.

i got the instant approval and the number on screen too, but its a one time use for sonystyle.com only.

They really want to steer you into actually buying stuff at sony, but if you wait for the card to come (and it takes like 5 days to arrive from what i remember) itll be worth it.

Weird, either they got too many applications and are swamped or it's toss up. I own my own house, have a decent salary, good job, etc and didn't get the instant approval... if I end up getting approved do I still get the $200 credit I wonder?

As long as you have a total order purchase that is $349+ within 45 days of your card being approved, then you should be good for the $200 credit.

The reason the card only works at sonystyle is that once you receive the card you must activate it first. Remember the little piece of tape on the card when you receive it that has the 1-800 number on it? It may not even be the same number, just a number that links the sonystyle store to your account.

It makes perfect sense from Sony's side to make the card good at their store immediately because then part of the $200 credit is a wash, atleast to them, because the retailer is not making a comission on the PS3 or whatever sony items you purchase. So for sony it is more like they gave you $100 or $150 credit which they are in turn splitting with the credit card company.

I signed up for the Sony Card but it said they needed review the application and give me a reply within 30 days. But, for some reason when I was checking my Wamu(Chase) credit card account I have a new SonyCard Playstation account that I haven't seen before. Never got an email or phone call saying I was approved which is weird. Going to have to call them tommorow.

Interesting... I also have two Chase cards already and use their online account management to pay my cards, etc. I just checked mine also and there's a new account with a $5,000 limit. Doesn't have a logo or anything like my other accounts.

For those that think they can use this card elsewhere and earn the $200 credit may be in for a dissappointment - below is from my email confirmation:

************************

Dear Sony Card member,

Welcome to Sony Card, and congratulations!
You are now eligible to qualify for a $200 card credit on your new Sony Card! In order to receive your card credit, just be sure to make your qualifying purchase of $349 or more on your Sony Card* at Sony Style.** Act soon ? this is a limited time offer for valued Sony Card holders like you!

*****************
I called the Sony Rewards CS agent and they confirmed that the $349 purchase must be at Sonystyle.com (or Sony retail outlet) to get the $200 credit back. He said purchases anywhere else do NOT qualify (I asked him this three times).

That's bull. Their terms did not clearly state you have to buy it from their store. I know slickdeals is gonna create a shit storm. Unfortunately, I'm still waiting for my application to be approved, but to be honest, I wish I didn't ever apply. If I do get approved, which I should, then I will see what happens with the offer..
