I am purchasing a laptop that i'll be using for personal use and also web design. I was thinking about putting server on there instead of pro. Is there any downside to this?
Some people will disagree but for me, Pro runs faster than Server for most applications. I see about a 20% difference with RC5 and Seti and that's with most of the services in Server disabled.
Unless you really needed a feature of Server, Professional would be the way to go. From what you're sayig though Professional should take care of your needs. Server is optimized for background processes and has a lot of services that would not being running in Professional.
Running a sessions on Server will be sluggish in most cases.
i had server installed on my desktop sys about 6 months agao and it ran pretty poorly (background services that were unneeded etc. also if you wil ever play games *drool* my frames were much worse in server, but other than the services i dont know why.
bottom line is pro should have everything u need for web design.
But will I be able to create databases (sql, coldfusion) on 2000 pro?
Yes, you can do that. I have sql server 7 running on my win2k pro as well as coldfusion. I use dreamweaver and front page for various updates on different sites as well. Unless you are going to run your own web site off your laptop, don't put server on.
