Partly it is because Australia is a mid-sized market, big enough to make a half decent production run, (20,000-100,000 units) but not too large that if you fvsk up, it does not destroy a company like GM.
Apart from that, Holden has one of the best car design teams in the world. This is the car they designed on their own time! It was not meant to be for production, but the response from the public was so overwhelming that Holden eventually released it and it is now selling very well.
