2004 Golf GLS or Civic SI Sedan

Anyone have a 2002 or newer VW Golf or Jetta, if so, how has it been?

I am looking at picking one of the two, or any other suggestions.

I'm generally a huge Honda fan (drive a Prelude myself), but from all accounts I've heard, the Civic Si is a huge disappointment. Tread carefully before you jump into one (i.e. test drives, etc.)

WTF? Civic SI Sedan?

You must be from Canada, since they don't have a Civic SI Sedan in the states.

Civic SI CANADA is equivalent to Civic EX in the US.

GOlf GLS VS Civic EX

Let's compare these
Power - GLS (I believe was 115hp 2.0L), Civic EX (127hp, 1.7L)
Maintenance - Civic EX will be cheaper
Cost when purchasing - Civic EX will be cheaper
Looks - it's up to you which has better looks
Reliability - Consumer Reports says Civic's better than VW.. infact.. many VW seems to be having problems.
Ride Quality - I never ridden on the GLS, but I heard Golf has a better ride quality

So ... my summary.. I think GLS is a better car.. and u get what you paid for.. but I would personally go with a Civic EX. Becuase I like the looks.. after market parts.. and I'm not rich.. and I have it myself. I went through the battle of Jetta GLS VS CIvic EX a while back.

civic si = overpriced! 20K for a car w/ under 170Hp but ricable! spend a little more and get more quality with the RSX.
the golfs look cool but i'm not sure about durability etc...

I'd go and try the cars before making the decision ... but i'd probably take the SI cuz they're just fun to drive and they're reliable. You should never have problems with the car.

my brother has a 2002 Jetta 1.8T and I have driver it quite often. The car is a lot of fun to drive and the features on it are great. It has had a few minor problems but nothing to serious and that wasnt fixed promptly by VW.

I am a Honda owner (Accord SE) and I agree that the Civic Si is a huge disappointment.

However I'm perplexed because I'm also on the VW-sucks-bandwagon.

So I vote neither.

Yeah, he's in Canada.

So, a better comparison would be a Civic EX and a Golf GLS.

GLS has a 2.0? Man, spend the extra $$$ and at least get the 1.8t.

Between THOSE two I would get the EX even though I LOVE VW.

I actually like it Looks hot to me If they only offered it in red here in the states, I'd be happy (seriously, Honda USA, WTF were you thinking?!?!? Si's have always come in red!!!!!!!! But no, the first year colors were white, black, silver, and "I've got the squirts and have been eating salad for all three meals" green)

edit: yeah the USDM Si is just the hatchback, not the sedan, but he also mentioned the Golf, which is a hatchback.

He said sedan. There is no current civic Si 4 dr in the states. You link proves that.

He clearly lives in Canada. Their Si == our EX.

Sorry, I was a little confused because he was asking about the Golf.

Ah, gotcha.

Well most of the golfs, save two options in the GL trim, are 4 door hatchbacks.
The GTi is the 2 door golf.

Yea, definatly a hatch.

I'd go with the honda as well. VW hasn't proven its quality is worth the price again.
