Well guys I'm in the debate to sell my Jaguar X-Type Sport. The car has treated me phenomenally but I've had it for a few years and I'm getting bored with it. I am wondering what opinions you have on getting an 05 GTO with the LS2 engine 6 speed. Reason I've looked at this is because for the money it seems to have a lot in terms of power and I like the looks of it. Now I'm not sold on one just yet so are there other options that you can recommend for around 15k? I would like to do a few mods later as well. If something else can give me performance for just a tad more I may be able to work it into my budget but it would have to be a vast margin of performance for me to go more than 15k. Thank you for any responses.

I love those cars.
I think the only issue is factory suspension set-up causes premature tire wear.
Interior is nice for a GM car, lots of power potential and flies under the radar.

When released, the natural competitors for the GTO came down to Mustangs and G35's.
Mustangs in that price range are a dime a dozen but are fine cars despite the 4.6 V8.
G35's...
At one point I liked them but between the "doochiness" of the G35 community around here and the sheer number of them on the road I just can't look at them anymore without bias.
Others around here could probably give you a better take on the competition.

Don't get it. It's a very slow and boring rebadged Chevy Cavalier. A Kia would be a better choice.

For $15k, I'm getting a 03/04 Cobra. If you do get a GTO, please de-wing it. Looks so much better.

Why not tell people it's a rebadged Studebaker?

I didn't know they made Cavaliers out of Holden Moneros and I didn't know a 13 second 1/4 mile was slow.

Edit: RWD GTOs are 9 inches longer, 4 inches wider, and 1000 lb. heavier than FWD Cavaliers.

(sarcasm acknowledged)

Between the "Cavalier" comments when it first started appearing in magazines and the dipshits complaining "It don't look like da one from when I was a kid therefore it sucks" it only makes the car more appealing to me when seeing it on the road.

A low mile 04 with the 5.7 would be every bit as good as an 05-06 with the 6.0 if you plan on modding it. They are great, great cars. Quality well above even some of what GM makes now. You have a gen III motor so power is reliable and way too easy, t56 is almost bullet proof, great interior and people can say cavalier all they want when they're eating crap from your tail-lights.

I went through this recently.. like said above the only competition in the price range is either a s197 mustang, 350z/g35 or maybe a low, low mile 4th gen fbody. 03-04 Cobras are still gonna be up near $20k without a salvage title and good fcking luck finding one anywhere remotely near stock. Maybe if you're lucky you could find a decent GTO near $15k.

From what I've heard 350z falls the hell apart, dunno how that translates to g35 but seeing how your average Infinity owner (doesn't) take care of their care I'd stay away.

S197 Mustangs are fun as hell. The chassis is amazing for what it is, they just handle really fun, toss around surprisingly easy and there is a massive aftermarket. But they are slow as hell stock- like stuck between lt1 and ls1 fbodies. But a whipple can change that all. They also hold amazing resale value for as mass produced as they are.

You could get a 4th gen fbody, not as nimble or fun feeling but still huge aftermarket and you can make power stupid easy with just a cam swap. But then you'd have to grow a mullet, fck your cousin and replace all the electronics twice a year.

Ive been having a hell of a time finding a 05/06 goat. Been using Manheim but the best I can find is in the mid 40k or modded.

One of my biggest regrets was not buying one when Pontiac couldn't even give these cars away. Stupid, stupid, stupid foghorn. It's vanilla looks was the only drawback. Small price to pay for an epic car.

Had one for 3 years, it was a great DD car. Performs well, rides well, does everything well.
Sold it when I wanted to go fast again. It's more like an M3 than a muscle car.

CTS-V. I would get that over GTO.
Other cars I have considered which includes that:
Jaguar S Type R, but it's an automatic and no upgrade room
VR4 3000 GT, but I've heard transmissions fail
CTS-V, I didn't like the looks but it did come in a 6 speed. Is the transmission alright and a good modding community?

I loved my GTO when I had it. The buyout I think was $15k way back in '08 when I turned it back in. There was some quirks to the car like the door locks and small trunk, but it drove like no other on the highway. I have never found a seat more comfortable for a long distance trip.

It seems that the price of the LS2 GTO has remained steady for the last couple years. I found a bunch of 20k mile models selling around $18,000 and almost picked one up.
