rethinking I'm wondering if LED backlights will enable larger LCD screens.... I don't think the industry would move towards bigger LCDs due to the much higher contrast ratio on plasma for tv use... however.. I'm not sure if the biggest problem with alrge LCDs is manufacturing a panel and backlight that big.. or rather just that the lighting on a huge LCD would be way too uneven. If it's the latter then LED backlights would enable you to do a much bigger screen.

samsung 82" LCD

sony 82" LCD

I couldn't find the article but i read somewhere about 3 months ago that we should have TVs like this coming to consumers by the end of 2006 to beginning of 2007, don't even ask how much somethign like this will cost, my guess would be 6 digits so I wouldn't be supprised if your still paying 4 digits for anythign larger than 30 or 40 inches in another year.

Before picking up the Sceptre because of its 1080p abilities, I would read reviews on avsforum from early adopters of this set after it comes out. Sceptre has various versions of its 37 inch set and reports on avsforum indicate that the most recent version has significant problems displaying 1080p (and Sceptre has been reluctant to acknowledge the problem). Hopefully, the 42 inch set will not suffer similar problems.

Keep in mind the Panny is basically a monitor - no tuner and (I think) no speakers. Just know what you are buying. Also, the large LCDs are the deeper and much heavier rear projection models, not the slim profile ones.

My Costco coupon book arrived Jan 3 the day after the holiday weekend at 7:45 PM. That's some serious overtime! Looks like the 37" Sceptre X37SV NAGA is still $1500. The other TVs I'm considering are the 32" Sony LCD Bravia @ $200 off, 42" Sceptre LCD @ $500 off, and the 42" Vizio Plasma HD @ $300 off.

No built-in ATSC tuner and no CableCard slot on the Costco version. If you don't mind the aesthetics of the unit--specifically that of the built-in speakers--and of course, have no need for the built-in tuner and CableCard capability, then this is a great deal as far as B&M stores go...and an even better deal if available in-store! Heck, if this offer had been available last September, I would have gotten it instead of the 50PX50U I did wind up buying at CC for $3600 + tax...

Does anyone know if the Panny is available in stores? Even without the coupon, I'd rather pick up in store, since shipping is $200, and you have to wait a few weeks for it.

Upon closer inspection of the Costco coupon book, it appears that the Panny is a Costco.com-only purchase. Well, it doesn't explicitly say that but the coupon doesn't mention anything about being able to purchase it in-store; in fact, the coupon only mentions that it's available at costco.com. Usually, some/many of the coupon items that are available for purchase in-store will also state something like "Also available at costco.com"; although the coupon for the Panny doesn't say "Available only at costco.com" (or something like that), it doesn't say "Also available at costco.com" either.

In any case, YMMV but I wouldn't be surprised if the Panny 50" is a Costco.com-only purchase...at least for that week (1/9-1/15).

Does the coupon for the Philips have a bar code at the back?
Or is that one a costco.com deal only as well

I bought the TV early (on sale next week). I have yet to hook it up to my HD receiver. It is my bedroom TV, so I did not want to spend up the a$$ (already have a 50" Panasonic LCD rear proj).

Initially, DVDs look decent. There is no HDMI, but it does have one set of components. No tuners, which is ok since I have directv (H20 being installed saturday). I'm still trying to find a good reason that this set is only $700.

Edit - I'm looking at it using my HR10-250, and its not bad. Obviously, it's not as stunning as my Panny, but its still good (considering the cost). This is probably a keeper.

I certainly wouldn't just assume (or even predict) the 6 megapixel is any better. Especially if they were the same price...there's probably a really good feature the 3 megapixel has the 6 one doesn't unless it was just blatantly overpriced.

And the glass is half empty right?

If anyone has the opportunity, pick up the December issue of Perfect Vision and read their story on HDTV sets capability of displaying full resolution...you'll be surprised at which sets do or don't.

watch out, the 32 Sony is Made in mexico. If you could get the Japanese producton line version, it is great. But Mexican lines are not as good, but still should do fine.

You can always PM with BB and get the %10 diffference.

example:
BB $1899
Costco $1699

$200 plus %10 = $220 off

BB price: $1679..
or something like that....

Bah, I'll consider Costco's return policies as worth the $20 difference.

I really wanted to get 3 years warranty though. besides, Japanese model was more tempting than Mexian ones sold all over.

By the way, what is the return policy of Costco ?
