What about a Mitsubishi Eclipse? The GT model with a manual tranny can be had for $23,400.

And thats not what MotorTrend tested for
By refined daily driver, you mean the GTI actually has torque below 15000000RPM, gotcha

Its not terrible looking, but when it weighs as much as my four door wagon and has 260HP FWD its just a big can of tire spinning sh!t IMO.

Yes it is.

Just an aside: I saw a Caliber parked in a driveway, only could see the back 1/4 or so and mistook it for an Aztek.

Also they engineered the car with aftermarket in mind. That car is a dream to work on. So easy to install stuff in there

I wouldn't say it's sh!t either, not the best... I like my mazda3's better, esp the cloth. Granted, some might say my car is plasticy too... at least it isn't as boring as a lot of other cars.

However, I disagree w/ "car is a dream to work on".... did you have to remove the rear struts to do a spring install? yeah.. that's a PITA. it's just shy the PITA my front struts are

I hate the way it looks, but Pontiac G6 coupe? V6, good mileage, coupe, cheap.

BTW fbrd, did you ever decide what new car you were going to pick up?

OP,

1. Get the 05/06 Legacy GT Ltd.
2. Ditch the RE92 tires
3. Get good tires (Falken Ziex 512 ftw)
4. Profit $$$$ Cha-Ching!

I test drove the tC and was less than impressed. The interior feels cheap compared to the Mazda 3 (that radio cover is beyond tacky looking), the sunroof rattled (on a NEW car, that is auto DQ), and the roof is way too low for me, I am 6'1" and my head was rubbing the ceiling with the seat all the way down. It has good handling and decent power, but they need to work on the interrior, and raise the freaking roof another 1".

512's are good? They're not terribly far ahead of the stockers IMHO.

You left out one important step; Jdm/Cusco rear sway bar.

A friend has a tC. I like the interior and exterior. It's quick, hi-reving, handles good, and fun to drive or ride in. I can't complain about anything on it. Priced well too.

Really? Nasioc and LegacyGT forums rate them as being a really good tire, especially for the price. I was about to pick 'em up from discount tire since they have them pretty cheap right now ($77 per tire + free shipping )

Hey, didn't you get the memo, that's powerful!

Out of 197 hp...dunno

what are the 0-60 times on this hyped car..

bunch o honda fan boys on here

guess never thought they were that great...styling is always lackluster...drab...

jC

7.2 and 1/4 mile in 15.1

I actually really like the new styling. It's a lot better than the competition imo (cobalt? that dodge suv-minvan-truck monstrosity?)

Oh yeah if you want somethign really quick (but again sh!tty interior), check out Neon SRTs

Those are Edmunds.com times, so they obviously have no clue how to drive it. Motortrend, C&D and R&T all got much better times then that. Lowest I think was C&D with 6.8 0-60 and I've read a couple reviews that listed it as 6.6 or so
Is that MT review online? Only one I see online is this, with 0-60 7.2 est.

Read one of the articles any of the major magazines have done on the new Si. Motortrend just did an Si versu GTi comparisson and the Honda spanked the VW. Downright gutted it on the track in every single handingle characteristic, despite having a huge torque disadvantage.

I think its more YOUR bias that has prevented you from even taking notice, the new Si is beyond anything in its price range - and has proven its capable of taking things well out of its price range too (on the track that is). 0-60 times are mid 6's, but quite irrelevant considering it can handle about as well as a Vette even though its FWD. Its a fun car to drive regardless of who you are, don't judge it until you've read something about it or actually driven it
Yet C&D gave 1st place to the GTI in their GTI vs Si test. Go figure.

Wiki says the 06 Civic Si avg's .90G lateral accel. How is that near a Vette?

I think I'm sold LGT Ltd, despite gas concerns But I also sold myself on paying for it in cash, so gimme another year or two

i will suggest the new Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec V.

it will be based on the new chasis design coming in 07.

07 sentra

nissan hasnt released anything on how it will look but that gives you a rough idea.

most likely they are going to throw in a revamped altima engine motor. at least that is what I have heard. should have plenty of torque. the spec engine right now is rated at ~180ft/lbs

No I've been looking for the GTI versus Si comparisson that they did. I did find

http://www.roadandtrack.com/article.asp...on_id=31&article_id=3370&page_number=2

That link shows 6.6 which is a much more accurate number for sure. Road and Track has completely different numbers for their handling stats though, compared to MotorTrend. The VW fans will enjoy the end of this article though, which recognizes the GTI as number one and Si placing second.

But I've been reading both magazines for years and Road and Track seems much more biased IMO. How a $30k car can beat a car that can be had for $20-22k, have Honda quality as opposed to VW's shameful quality, and outhandle the GTi so bad on a track that it beats it by 8 car lengths (quite a short track), I will never know. Thats Road and Track for you.

I looked closer and Edmunds never actually tested the 0-60, thats how they got 7.2 - they took Honda's estimated rating. Same as the above link (motortrend)

I hope its not going to look like that! It looks like a squished Altima

The engine in the Sentra has always been an Altima motor, designed for premium gas and makes a little more power. IMO, a 160-170HP I-4 that uses Premium just isn't worth it; much like the Civic Si. If you're going premium, make some real fvcking power for god's sake.

That said I don't mind the Sentra much, seriously considered one several years ago. But not premium for a relatively slow four banger, no thanks.

That's a stretch... not entirely impossible, but I mean that's without any options/packages or metallic paint (unless you want white or black or a simple red). And reliability is yet unknown...

BUT it does have fantastic reviews so far.. many are saying its a blast to drive (even without Quattro) and it gets 31mpg highway.

Read the headlines.

Grace and handling finish second to a fast and practical box.

EDIT: BTW I don't see where they picked a winner there. By that title I would think they picked the Honda as number one. It also says, further down

"For the first time in anyone?s memory, we have a tie in the ?gotta have it? column. Usually, we have an instinctive idea of which car is going to emerge the winner in a comparison test before we tally the scores. Not in this comparo. We had to wait for the ballots to be counted before we knew which corner could celebrate"

Where is that you see the GTI win?

And if not, then sorry but the Honda is more practical IMO, and just because it loses in the 1/4 mile doesn't mean it will lose on a track. They didn't test on an actual track, neither did R&T with the other article I posted. I will also have my $8-10k I saved when buying the Si and make it more then the GTI could ever be at its $30k price tag. Some may say I'm just a Honda fan boy, but its really that I just hate VW. I have to listen to horror stories all the time about them since my roommates brother and friends work as mechanics for them. Being that I know people who work for Honda as well, I know where I stand and why. From my experience, most of the people on this forum don't work on their own cars - or are even capable of it. But for anyone who does, tell me now which is easier to work on - Honda or VW. And which you'll have to work on more often.

As for the wiki number, I don't know where they got that from - MotorTrend shows .98 lateral G. Which is insane for a FWD car, I don't care what you guys say

I just wanted to throw in another car to the mix. what I meant by revamped is it will be a beefier more power QR25. I have heard the newly designed engine will output ~200hp. ie to compete with the likes of the SI.

I also like these cars because like I mentioned they have very good torque compared to the high-rev cars like the SI.
