Whoa... $266 is pretty freaking nuts. I want, but I don't have the money
Edit: Also, since the FSB is low in comparison to the 1333 chips, the quadcore should have some overclocking headroom. If I make some money over spring break I might have to get one of these... my GF is gonna kill me :\

I bought the exact same motherboard last week with an E6400. Now i'm concerned about the 1333MHz FSB support for future CPUs. I read somewhere that this is done with a recent bios update on the asus motherboards. Is that correct?

The current crop of Kentsfields aren't doing much higher than 3Ghz on air. Things aren't going to get better if they have a midrange SKU to bin down to (except that maybe people buying the higher end models will have a slightly better chance of picking a winner). Coming from my current setup, 3Ghz on a C2d isn't all that interesting of a jump.
I'm waiting for something that has a chance of hitting 4Ghz on air before I upgrade, so I am probably at least waiting for Penryn (I can't really justify the cost of a full platform upgrade unless my single-core performance is going to double).

Most Kentsfields I've seen have no problem breaking 3.2GHz, the main limiting factor seems to be heat at this stage, as with raised voltages it pushes over 150W at 3GHz+ speeds!
A 3.2GHz Conroe/Kentsfield will be around 35 - 40% faster than an Opty @ 2.8GHz which is quite a significant jump. Of course at 4GHz it'll be closer to ~70% faster.

I'm hoping Barcelona is one amazing CPU.
It would be so good for the market if AMD could leapfrog Intel with K10.
If Barcelona fails we all lose. If Barcelona is great we all win.
Go AMD!

In the long run we will win. The only reason why we are enjoying cheap and powerful CPUs right now was the success of the K8 4-5 years ago. How long do you think Intel will hold out on the prices? My guess is until Penryn or Nethlem with the introduction of the Barcelona. Then we will be seeing 300-600 dollars for the main stream again.
