2007 CPU Price War

I'm still drooling over a $266 quad at 2.4Ghz... I know it will help with my massive file encoding but would hope that games start taking advantage of all these processing cores.

Edit: Also, since the FSB is low in comparison to the 1333 chips, the quadcore should have some overclocking headroom. If I make some money over spring break I might have to get one of these... my GF is gonna kill me :\

A 3.2GHz Conroe/Kentsfield will be around 35 - 40% faster than an Opty @ 2.8GHz which is quite a significant jump. Of course at 4GHz it'll be closer to ~70% faster.

These upcoming price cuts makes me think Intel has high regard for Barcelona.

I'm hoping Barcelona is one amazing CPU.

It would be so good for the market if AMD could leapfrog Intel with K10.

If Barcelona fails we all lose. If Barcelona is great we all win.

With that Q3 pricing on the Q6600 I may still bite. Have to hand it to Intel for pricing things so aggressively.

Business is war somtimes! And the rivalry between Intel and AMD runs deep and spans multiple decades in both the courtrooms and the marketplace. These price cuts could be a sign of the anticipated Barcelona performance, or simply Intel's latest escalation of the price war to put AMD back into its traditional proper place, i.e. as the necessary but managed anti-trust insurance. NAPALM! Either way, it's great to upgrade this year.

In the long run we will win. The only reason why we are enjoying cheap and powerful CPUs right now was the success of the K8 4-5 years ago. How long do you think Intel will hold out on the prices? My guess is until Penryn or Nethlem with the introduction of the Barcelona. Then we will be seeing 300-600 dollars for the main stream again.

More like we will have a long stretch where Intel doesn't drop prices anymore. After these price cuts, I don't really expect the prices to change until the release of Penryn derivatives.

And the mainstream has been redefined now, as Quad Cores simply instead of Dual Core, these prices should hold until Yorkfield comes in where Intel has a chance to reduce cost and possibility introduce at higher price points.
