I think I remember someone from AU (who is also a lucky SOB with a Falcon) posted saying that Ford of USA and Ford of AU are pretty much separate company's. I'm sure there is more to it then that so I'll let others chime in to better explain it.

This Focus would have to be a TOTAL revamp for me to even consider it.

Well, that may be the case with the 3, but I got an awesome deal on the Speed6 because no one knows about them. ~$7k under MSRP, ~$4k under dealer invoice.

They can charge significantly more for a car the size of a Focus in Europe, hence they can afford to put more into, making the European Focus a classier act. It's as simple as that.

Thank you! That is a major reason, the other is reason is more lax regulations on emissions, safety (body crumple zones), and other types of laws.

I don't think that's necessarily true. A lot of the features that could have been added are slowly being added. A bulk of the price differences can be attributed to taxes.

Well, it is the first new car I've had in 14 years...

Also, nobody knowing about it has served me well. The town registered me as a 4 cylinder Mazda "6 series"...for $100 less than I was expecting.

Haha is that what they call it there, the focus XR5... for those that know, is the focus the same car in england aswell as the US? or is it different?

The Orange car is the Focus ST. It has the Volvo five pot with a snail, but only 225hp. Don't get me wrong, it's plenty of grunt for a Focus, but 250 is just a sweet number. nothing a little remap won't fix however.
