2008 Hot Dog Eating Championships

For anyone who missed it, Chestnut beat Kobiyashi in overtime. They were tied at 59 dogs at the end of 10 minute regulation, but Chestnut won the 5 dog speed eating to retain his title.

I don't understand why they judge by when the hot dog is in the mouth. It makes way more sense to judge by when the hot dog is completely finished and swallowed. This would have eliminated the unnecessary tie-breaker.

They should just up the time limit to an hour. Once you get beyond 100 dogs it really separates the men from the boys, there won't be any ties.

I told my co-workers to put money on Joey Chestnut, but they didn't listen! Kobiyashi is a good power eater, but he's past his prime!

Who knew that you could successfully handicap a professional eating competition by studying 2008 season win/loss records?

i was there at coney island today...the place was packed. about an hr before it started they announced attendance at ~35,000. I stood on a ledge so got a good view. i dont think you can hardly say that kobiyashi is out of his prime...he finished 59 hotdogs, which was 4 left than last year's record setting performance (2 less minutes this time). Yes, he lost 2 years in a row, but he's getting better (Chestnut is just a little better)

I seem to remember the US getting quite a few gold medals at the last olympics, and the one before that.

The US basketball team will win this year. I think its awesome that so many countries have improved their basketball skill level but they also have the added advantage of playing together for a number of years with the same rules that are used for FIBA and the Olympics. I like this 3-year commitment thing Coach K is doing and can't wait to see some games.
