A man dressed as a tiger carries a small whip made from rope in Zitlala, Guerrero state, Mexico, Monday, May 5, 2008. Every year, inhabitants of this town participate in a violent ceremony to ask for a good harvest and plenty of rain, at the end of the ceremony men battle each other with their whips while wearing tiger masks and costumes.

Yeah yeah, I know that jazz about respecting cultures and such, but damn, we've come up with some really screwed up stuff over the centuries.

"Hey, I know! Let's dress up like animals and whip each other! This will surely give us rain and good crops!"


Why aren't there more rituals like that involving sex instead of pain? It makes about as much sense, and would be a lot more enjoyable.




And from the looks of that site, you'd think 90% of humanity's existence is spent finding new and innovative ways of killing each other. Kind of sucks that we're still so pathetically primitive that we often insist on doing just that over the silliest little things.

I found it pretty disturbing.... I mean, it's not really a fail on his part since he didn't care. His goal was achieved by killing those people. It would be an lol if only he died & noone else got injured, etc.

agreed.. especially the dead-looking injured kenyan with photographers all around him. I remember similar (albeit less graphic) scenes in Bangkok during the Saffron Revolution and in McLeod Ganj while the Tibetans were protesting before the Olympics. Its like you have an event in progress and a bunch of white people with expensive camera equipment filling in the cracks.
