Get off your lazy ass and look for yourself.

If some punk smacked me on my way out of ANY store, he'd be freaking dead. That's what you'd get for being a lazy annoying ass motherfvcker. I hate people like you.

*edit*
Also, they probably TOLD you they had some, then when you got there they were like 'oh.. wait.. someone walked away just FIVE minutes ago with all of them.

Hey dont call me a motherfvcker again on a public forum, got it? You have something to say to me perosnally you e-mail or PM me. And turn on your PMs I want to talk to you, or email me at jambalia236@vt.edu

You know, before you go telling other people what NOT to say on a public forum, you may consider living by your own rules. Hypocricy is not considered a great virtue around here.

SF Bay Area update:

Checked personally
Fairfield: OOS
Pleasant Hill/Concord/Walnut Creek: OOS
Pinole: ALL 160 GBs

Checked by others (mentioned above)
Milpitas, CA = 4 drives, all 160's.
San Jose, CA = 1 drive, locked up in a cabinet behind the CS counter, 160 inside.
Marin City: All 160GB

Stores that had drives in stock as of 2:00 PST (all i can remember)
Pittsburg - someone check
Dublin - someone check
Pinole - all 160s here as mentioned before

I had the CSR pull up the entire bay area, about half of the stores showed 0 available.

damn, out of luck in the bay area.

Does no one have PMs on here? It was directed at an unknown assailant his was not, but you are right it was unnecessary and for that I do apologize, a moment of dissapointment after a decent amount of time invested Im sure you know how that can be.

I would edit it out but then it would seem as if I am changing it to hide the truth, but all I can do is apologize.

Me a bad ass? by no means, I just take offense to certain things and I dont think they need ot dicsussed ona public form, but like I said I ahve tried cotnacting him a number of different ways.

cheers

For anyone who ran into similar problems as me, I finally got Windows to reconize all 180ish gigs of the HD but I had to use the Data Lifeguard Tool that came with the drive to partition the drive into 2 roughly 100 gig partitions. I wasn't able to do it in Windows. For some reason, when I deleted the second partition on the HD, it reverted back to only seeing it as 10G free space. Now I've just got to figure out why boot up is so slow for me after adding these two 200 Gig drives in with the 80.

You need both a 48-bit LBA-capable BIOS (which the ATA controller will supply), and either XP and a required manual registry edit, or XP SP1. Note that you have to boot off of the XP SP1 disc, I think, if you want the entire large drive as your boot/system drive. You can't boot off of XP, and then apply XP SP1 later, it won't work. In that case, you would be better off just using the smaller drive as a boot/system drive, and then installing the larger drive once XP SP1 is fully installed.

I checked last nite at Dublin and they had 2x with the 200GB...they had 1 when I left. I went back today and they only had 1x w/ 160GB...now they have none. The SF downtown store also only had 160GB drives.

For those in the SF Bay Area...if you have AMEX w/BVG, I've successfully, in the past, used an ad from ATACOM in Fremont to use for my submissions to AMEX. In the August issue of Computer User (free newspaper here in SF Bay Area), p. 42 they list the WD 160GB drive for $129. Based on that, I plan to submit my claim for $70 back, making my total = $216 (with tax) -$100 (Rebates) - $70 (BVG) = $46 for 200GB & 160GB = 23 cent to 29 cent per GB.

I've another on order...hoping that one ships with a 200GB.

And sorry, don't have a scanner available nor time to post the ad...it's not listed on the website either. Maybe someone else can help out.

Ok I struck out at the Laurel MD store. Got there about 7:15 tonight and two separate sales guys said they were all out of 160gig drives. There were no 160GB drives on the shelf but there was a big stack of WD drives way up top. Both of the employees I talked to were confident that there weren't any up there but I didn't actually convince one of them to show me.

So if you got a drive at the Laurel store after 7:15 tonight be sure to post and tell me that I should be more coercive next time in making them show me the stock on top of the aisle.

Rorschach-
They screwed you man! I saw several 160's up there. Unless they sold all those between 1PM and 7PM (not all that likely), they were lying.
Doh! I'm going to Annapolis tomorrow for a dr's appointment. i'll look in there for ya.

Hopefully the XP patch below will solve your problems. The link is from the Maxtor site but it adds a registry entry to your operating system so it doesn't matter what hard drive you're using. Good luck. Please let me know if this works.

What a class act!

The AnandTech Community at its BEST... two guys never even met, but because there is a commonality they look out for one another! Too bad the rest of the world isn't like that!

I am using the 80 gig drive as the boot drive and I do have SP1 installed on XP, so perhaps I do need to edit the registry. I have the newest bios for my Epox 8kha+ motherboard and everything. I also noticed that windows event logs said that the firmware for the controller was old and might not work as efficiently, so I went to Western Digital's site and downloaded the new firmware. Hopefully, it'll get rid of those warnings. Just fyi if anyone else has a question about that.

I'll try the big drive enabler thing later, though I'm a little hesitant about it since I am running SP1 of XP and all. I've been running hard drive diagonistics all afternoon making sure I don't have any bad sectors or anything on my drives before I start storing important things on there--a lesson learn from my old 30 gig drive that died on me after the warrenty ran out and I never tested the drive since it was just sitting in my closet for a year while I shopped around for other parts for my soon to be built computer.

Yeah I was suspicious since they had at least 10 of those orange WD drive boxes up above the shelves. There weren't any 160s at all left on the shelf. I guess it's possible that they all disappeared, there was another guy that came 2 minutes after I did that was looking for the 200s too I didn't ask if he got the info from here or another deal site.

Thanks for helping me out, though, thanks also to Netopia. With all the HD deals lately I'll get my freevo drive sooner or later

Crap, I'm still getting the following message in my XP system event log:
The driver has detected that device \Device\Scsi\ultra1 has old or out-of-date firmware. Reduced performance may result.

I'm also still unable to successfully format the second partition of the 200 gig drive. Ah well, I'll work on this some more tomorrow after work and school. That large drive enabler from Maxtor also didn't work.

Checked with 4 different best buys all in the Sacramento/Roseville area all 160s. They had some stacked up on top but they were all 160s too. Sigh.

What motherboard are you using? Do you know if the motherboard itself will support drives over 137GB??
Also, would it be a problem if you used the WD 200GB as the main system with the OS and then used the 80GB for secondary storage??

Outpost has the maxtor 200GB/7200/8MBcache drive for $130 / after one rebate. I know it is 30% more than the BB deal but I still think it is a fairly decent price. Does anyone know if this drive is as good as the western digital?

I really need a new large hard drive...
