Hi All,

Building my first SFF and there is only one concern for me...

I have a mATX Power supply that is a mere 200w (it came with the case) it looks of average quality.

My Components are as follows...
P4 3.4ghz PPGA775 Prescott
Intel 915GAGL (Video, Lan, Sound)
512 OCZ EL DDR400 (2 x 256mb dimms)
Intel Stock HSF (Will upgrade to Zalman 7000ALCU)
80GB SATA150 Seagate 7200rpm
HP 300i DVDRW (hacked to a limited NEC 1300A)
No Floppy (saving power)
No Card readers
Wireless Kbd + Mouse (the USB sensor will draw some watts)
1 x 60mm rear exhaust fan (dont know the RPM, one of those 1/2" thick ones)

Things that I am thinking of adding....
ATI X800 XL PCIe
1 x Sunon High Speed 60mm fan (to replace the one above)
1 x 80mm case fan (modified to fit)
1 x PCI Slot cooler (to keep my vid card cool)

I am hoping to get some feedback and some estimates on power usage for the components. Thank you all for helping. I have not put together this thing yet.

Thanks to all that can contribute.

Best Regards,

DuckmanX

Unless it is a truly appalling power supply it is unlikely to kill anything, even if it is insufficient. I'd say slap the system together, power it up, load it up, and see if it stays stable. If it can take a stress test, and there is no overheating and no crispy odors, life is good. If not, replace the power supply. You might get lucky; but it'll be a bit of a close thing. A prescott like that will draw c. 120 watts under peak load by itself.

120W off of a prescott? Holy *#$&%...

I am still kinda weary because I had a Powmax (I know... I know...) PSU and it went pop after about 10 mins of useage... All components were fine but the Powmax PSU (rated at 550w) was killed. All I had was everything mentioned above, as well as an extra HDD and CDRW.

I am thinking of abandoning this computer and maybe settle for something more tame... Or I can get my Aria, but its HUGE compated to that one... The case I have is close to a Antec Minuet.

Would a 250W Antec do the job for ALL the specs mentioned above?

Thanks,

Not enough power!

Normally I just cringe when somebody asky if a 500W PSU is enough to run their Celeron 333

In this case though I think 250W of QUALITY power is the better route.

For the record, I measured the power consumption of following machine at 150 Watts Peak with a Wattmeter:
P4 2.2
2x 7200RPM Maxtor drives
ATI R9600Pro
3 80mm casefans

Is this without a CD\DVD-RW???
I mayjust be able to run it with a weaker non-prescott chip. like a 2.8 or something without the video card....

CD / DVD drives were idling

A burner runs at about 5-10 Watts when wrinting. reading is usually about 5.

Hmmm.... I may just take a chance and hope it powers up... does anyone know the power consumption between the prescotts vs the northwoods?

Northwoods consume a lot less, but at this point I wouldn't recommend buying into outdated technology.

Some food for thought.

While not the same thing, how can a laptop, with P4 3.4GHz performance, 128 meg ATi 9700, 512 meg, DVD burner (NEC 6500a), wireless G, Bluetooth, 56k modem, surround sound with powered sub, PCMCIA GPS, SD card reader, 100 gig HD, and a 17" screen (yes, even the screen is powered), all work great with a 90watt power supply that is overkill?.?.?.?

RobsTV,

That does pose an interesting question... Arent most laptops customized to conserve power? So the mainboard\peripherals\VPU\CPU are slightly different to consume less wattage? but then again, 90W seems still too low.

its an MATX case so there arent too many reputable 300W MATX PSU's available. I wouldnt trust powmax as a paperweight.

Update: I heard there were two types of LGA775 3.4ghz chips made. PRB 0 and PRB 1.
PRB 1 uses max 115W while PRB 0 uses only 89. That may mean I can fit another fan or two in there

I will try it out next week, I just got in a heavier cooler (instead of intel stock) CNPS7000 (woulda went 7700 but wont fit in matx case). Since there will be lower rpms run on the CPU fan because of the better temp transfer, it should also be healthier on my 200w PSU.
