A5 is pretty impractical, otherwise it's simply gorgeous. The legroom behind is acceptable for an adult, at least for casual use, but don't expect anyone to like it there. The trunk is good, so maybe it is practical, just not really meant for 4

The A4 is a great car (not much of a drivers car, but for the good ol' USA it's good enough), but between a fully loaded A4 and the A5, I'd go for the... S4. I love the understated looks, to drivetrain is to die for, and it'll probably keep its value better than the loaded A4 (you lose big money on options). It's a very special car, that.

I love our 2010 A4, but if we didn't need the extra practicality, we would definitely gone with the A5...beautiful car.

Get the A4. Yes, A5 is beautiful car to look at, I love everything about it, and S5 is one of my dream cars.
But, and it's a big one for me, to me it's a midlife crisis car. It's a car you buy to impress gold diggers.

I vote A4 with the toys. Why not get the sport package if you want to add wheels anyways? $1500 for 18", sport suspension, and sport seats seems to be a pretty good deal.

i think i'm goign sports pack if i do now. its not very much more.... plus the wheel is 3 spokes instead of 4.

but yeah, granted this thread seems to heavily favor the A5, but i'm probably getting an A4 premium plus , sport pack. proably black with black interior... @ 500 under invoice which seems like a good deal. After thinking about it a lot today, the front and rear of the A4 and A5 look almost exactly the same. The side obviously looks differnet, but I don't think its a huge enough differentiator.

I actually decided I didn't need a nav, and might just buy a nexus one as consolation since its $2500 for a nav system which seems a bit absurd to me. So i'm probably going to end up with a 2010 A4 premium plus , quattro with sport pack, and $5000+ left over compared to an A5 with same options. Seems they are doing $500 UNDER invoice and 1.9% APR , so the recession has made this car really not obscenely expensive.

Oddly after all the posts about people staring at your car , I realized I didnt really want that. I don't want that much attention, I had a very hot coupe 5 years ago (i posted here when i got it actually) and remember having everyone talk about my car constantly and cops following me around some cities etc, and that being a little annoying.

And yeah the S4 is nice. Its like another $17kish though, and I really don't care to be going that fast. Might get an ecu reflash on the A4 later if I get that itch.

A4, but if you're maxing out the A4 you probably are in slightly used S4 territory. I would not spend $45k on an A4 geeked out or not.

I don't know where you live, but the gold diggers around here that even know what a Audi is aren't going to be impressed by a $60k car.

The factory Sat Nav units are RIDICULOUSLY expensive...not worth it getting them new imo...but 2nd hand is the way to go but I've heard the US market isn't the same like the UK for 2nd hand cars.

Audi wanted £1.5k for the S3 Sat Nav unit for my mate also...he got the steering wheel upgrade, recaro racing seats instead.

its $2500 US for the sat nav here whcih comes with backup camera .

The last car I bought was about 5 years ago, and it was $2000 on that, but at the time a good decent sized handheld one with text to speech was $600 (it was an acura). Now its sort of inexcuseable but people keep paying so they dont lower prices. The audi nav seemed pretty terrible too. the voice on it was just digitized computer voice and not a real person like most other luxury makes. It sounded exactly like my android phone when i checked it out so I decided it wasnt possibly worth it.

the A4 is massively understeering when driven enthusiastic. the a5 is a bit better since the quattro system has a different torque distribution (more torque to the read wheels). but both of them are fat & lazy cars for german highways - so driving fast in a straight line is their sole purpose

I bought essentially the same car you're looking at...brilliant black on black. I didn't see the need for navigation either as the MMI already had the iPod interface that I really wanted and the only time I use Nav these days is on long trips...and for that I have a portable one... 2500 was just too much. One option I did get which you didn't mention was the Bang and Olufson speaker/amp upgrade...I'd definitely recommend it...really fantastic sound.

Because of my wife, we unfortunately got the automatic, but it is a good automatic and as long as it is in S mode, it doesn't really bother me at all.

I will very likely chip the car...just holding off at the moment...might wait till after warranty is up and going APR instead of paying the extra to get the Stassis chip since my wife is mostly driving the car at the moment.

uh, the A4 can also get the updated, rear-bias quattro and as well as the torque vectoring sport differential, IIRC.

Um...you might want to recheck your information. The B8 A4 has the same quattro system as the A5 with a 40/60 split on torque. The new B8 is also less nose heavy due to repackaging of the front end just like the A5 (battery is even in the trunk to redistribute weight). I'm not saying it is as well balanced as a 3 series...but it is dang close. The S4 has an even more advanced Quattro system that does torque vectoring which enhances performance even more. Read any recent reviews (like Car & Driver) of the car and you will hear the praise. Better yet, go drive one ...it will speak for itself.

i did drive quattros in the snow, and they all are understeering as normal fwd cars
i didn't drive the latest A4 though
but i think it's nose weighted as hell like every other VW

The weight distribution is 55/45...so it is still nose heavy, but it does not understeer anything like the older A4's. For an "experts" opinion, Car & Driver placed the S4 above the 335i (RWD)...part of that win being the driving dynamics...and most people would consider the 3 series near the pinnacle of driving dynamics. It may not be to your taste...but you really need to drive the new platform before passing judgement (the first really new platform in the A4 since 1995...it is called the MLP and it underpins both the A5 and the A4).

The A4 doesn't understeer. I mean, it does ultimately, but the amount of grip that thing is insane. It's a league beyond my MK5 GTI, and I can push a car around pretty good (proper Rally training in my past).

If you go with their Dynamic drive, get the one (Drive Select I think) where you can select steering/suspension settings individually. I didn't have Drive Select on the one I tried, and in Dynamic the steering was reasonable but the suspension too hard, while on Normal the suspension was OK but the steering was too soft and vague.

I was thoroughly impressed by the A4, it's a very complete car, the 2.0T engine is a gem and the interior is second to none.

if you think a GTI got great traction, you should drive a mx5

My business partner had an MX5, never cared much for that. Too soft, even on sports pack. The GTI is grippier as long as the surface is good, but the A4 is really impressive.

ok maybe US mx5s are soft as hell, but i can assure you, an european mx5 drives circles around a gti (in terms of grip)
1.05G lateral g with normal summer tires on a normal street (with a stock mx5 nc)
try to beat that in any VW

the only time a man should be in a miata is on an autocross track or going on a picnic with a babe.

Outside that you look like a clown without his suit on.

the new S4 has torque vectoring though with the optional active diff. I wish it was an option on the A4. I dont need like 350 hp, but the handling would be awesome. same with the s-tronic dsg which would be nice over a normal auto as well.
