2010 Pathfinder or 2009 Acura MDX

I currently own a 2010 Nissan Pathfinder, and the thing seems to be falling apart at 90000 miles. I brought the truck to Queens NY from Toronto Canada in Dec 2017, where it spent it's last 12000 miles.

In that time the blower motor, EVAP system (canister vent valve solenoid), front tie rods, front lower ball joints, right front wheel bearing, radiator fan clutch have all failed. I am in the process of repairing these items. It also has a ton of under body rust (typical of Toronto Nissan's of this age). Fuel mileage is absolutely dismal, worse than my dad's 5.0V8 F-150. Ill probably be lucky to sell it for 9k US in the spring.

My dad bought a 2009 Acura MDX brand new late 2008, that has 80000 miles, and currently needs nothing. Garaged kept, no rust, in very good condition. He will sell it to me for $10k CDN / $7300 US. I am concerned that once it lives in Queens, with a daily commute to downtown Brooklyn that it will start to fall apart as well given it's age.


Should I stick with the Pathfinder after the repairs, or should I get the MDX?

if the acura has had great maintenance like you say, then i would say its an upgrade. and you end up with a few dollars back as well? go for it. the acura will likly be more reliable being a honda vs a nissan anyway.

Pathfinder's are not exactly quality vehicles to begin with.
Acura MDXs are pretty solid BUT there is a transmission issue that required a software update on them. There is the risk that it will be part of the classic Honda trap....everything is great except for the occasional transmission replacement every 120K -200K.
It should do fine in Brooklyn.

Nissan v6/V8 normally have subpar mpg. They are tuned for a little more power.

My g35x sedan gets worst mileage then most V8 trucks. But it's reliable enough for me to keep around for now. Until rust comes into play.

I would make the switch to the mdx. There is a Bluetooth module issue that causes a battery drain. The transmission don't have a great history but aside from that not much goes wrong.

I wouldn't say ur Pathfinder has a lot of wrong things. Very much in line of normal wear and tear maintenance on a 100k truck.

End of the day giving that u can swap for cheap. Get the mdx. Unless u need the Pathfinder for towing or size

The other posters are more familiar with the Pathfinder, although I've occasionally considered it for myself. With my limited knowledge, I would agree more or less with T2urtle about longevity and parts going bad, although I've seen better. I might have hoped you would've got another 20,000 miles before those troubles.

Further, with the rust you describe, it would need attention. So I would say that you should swing to the Acura. I won't gloat over my own SUV, which is boastfully featured in some other threads with some current OCD worries of little consequence.
