2011 CPU still good at 2016

I have an old q9500 s775 that runs all the current games at ultra/high settings at 25-45 fps. Thats more than playable. I built it in 2006-2007. I have since upgraded to an i7 4790k in an 1150 mobo and yes, these games play MUCH better, but the old system is still damn good. I took it to work so I could play some games in my spare time.

Agreed there are far more expensive hobbies than computers!

I only aim for mostly budget stuff and my own PC costs/year has been progressively decreasing in both nominal and inflated adjusted terms since 2003. That's not even factoring the energy savings since the Sandy Bridge era. "PC building is expensive" is a rubbish statement.

I don't think they are expensive..they are expensive. My post was related to the cost of then vs now, and that it isn't too much of a surprise a $1k cpu then still can strutt its stuff today while the same could not be said for i5 and maybe even the lowest i7.

Whoever bought a $1000 990X new earliest back in Q1'11 would have got their ass whooped by a $330 2600K released like just one month later. How's that price/performance going for that guy?

Nhir, you do know enthusiast are usually building PCs to game, right? MOST people buying these super powered chips are looking to build a monster game rig.

I consider myself an ethusiast, but I rarely game. There's so much more you can do with a PC other than gaming. Yeah, back when there were only single core processors it made sense to have multiple CPUs in your rig. With today's multiple core processors, SSDs and integrated everything it seems silly to waste all that $$. Of course, I wasted enough $$ on my build. :sneaky:
