As much as I resisted, I got the Dead Space pack. I should know better than to even try to resist.

Ok I know this is a Halloween themed sale. But I did not finish Dead Space because I got tired of putting myself through constant sense of being afraid. Half-Life 2 and Bioshock I enjoyed more because though they have elements of this, it's limited and mostly action or good story.

So where do FEAR and STALKER fit? Closer to Dead Space (mostly scares) or closer to HL2/Bioshock (mostly action/story)?

EDIT: Wow when did I hit the 1,000th post milestone? Do I now get invited to the secret meetings or at least get a cookie or something?

I just thought I'd add a few mini-reviews of the games I've played.

Painkiller - One of my favorite FPS games. I agree with everyone else that the original is by far the best. However I disagree about the others. While they are not nearly as great as the original, they are not as horrible as everyone makes them out to be.

Amnesia - I just started playing this one and I'm already over half way through. After a rocky start, I'm starting to get into it. It reminds me of Myst but with monsters and more story. Overall I would recommend it for this price.

Bioshock - Just plain awesome. It has the best story I've ever seen in an FPS game.

FEAR - I played part of the original. It wasn't bad but I don't remember anything outstanding either.

Plants vs Zombies - Awesome tower defense game. I don't think I've met anyone who disliked it.

Terraria - A neat little (actually huge) game with great oldschool style graphics. I'm not sure how to describe it but I liked it a lot.

GhostBusters the Videogame (NOT Sanctum of Slime) - Never even got it to start.

Stalker has excellent atmosphere but not a whole lot of "BOO!" moments.

Fear has a handful of "BOO!" moments but the game is definitely fixated more on the action aspect of the game.

I just played some of Dead Space on PC last night.

I've totally lost my PC gaming manhood. Playing in a dark room with my crappy earbuds was such an unremittingly tense experience that I only lasted about an hour. It's a much more immersive game on PC, and I actually thought it was pretty good on PS3.

It's too bad I can't make eyefinity work. 5040x1050 shows up, but I get a BSoD if I try to use it.

I picked up Dead Space pack and Ghost Busters. I would pick up more games as there's much more good stuff on sale but I'm really trying to keep my Steam spending low now since I have so many games I've never touched.

I finished dead space (from a hard copy purchase). It's pretty good, I give it a 7.5/10. I got spooked once so far :awe:.

Gonna grab Dead space 2 :O

If you have any interest in point-and-click adventures *at all*, may I STRONGLY recommend Scratches: Director's Cut. I've been playing it for the past couple of days and it's extremely interesting, very well-written, and it contains some serious nightmare fuel.

Dead Space is hard for me to get into. I've owned it on Steam for a couple years now, and it has some very nice gameplay mechanics, but ultimately it becomes boring after a while. With Halloween coming up, I tried to play it again just a few days ago, but after getting to about Chapter 5 I'm tired of it already.

The entire premise of Dead Space feels like this: "You board an abandoned spaceship. Monsters pop out of vents. You shoot the monsters. Repeat for 10 hours (or however long it takes to beat the game). It just kind of loses interest for me.

It doesn't help that the game has a bad case of Doom-3-syndrome, where all of the environments are just generic metal corridors with various blood and guts spewed around in random intervals.

How does Dead Space 2 compare?

It took me close to 10 hrs to finish the game that's for sure :awe:

How strongly, is it that good?

Scratches is a delightful and immersive treat that rewards gamers who pay really close attention to detail. One of the absolute best and most frightening adventure games I've ever played, but only if you let it suck you into a world of chaos, insanity, and questioning reality in general.

Like I posted earlier though, the scares are much more subtle than you're average horror game. There are no monsters popping out going "ARGHGHBLLARRGHH", but rather, there are certain things that make you go "Woah, did that really just happen?" or "Oh jesus christ what am I hearing?"

It's because the game doesn't mindlessly desensitize you to horror that makes it so brilliant. I consider it a very "classy" kind of horror game; everything is very well-written, and when you do get scared, it never feels cheap, and it never does the same thing more than once. Every fright you experience in the game is a very legitimate sense of terror.

Scratches does such a good job at making you want to know more. Everytime I exit the game, I'm constantly drawn back to it, because I want to understand the history of the old house, I want full closure on the events that happened there, and I want to figure out every little mystery that encompasses it.

The company went out of business a while ago because of various low scores, even though it was reviewed as one of the best of it's kind by a very reputable fan of the genre.

Damn shame, really.

Ok, I'll give it a chance.

Don't feel pressured or anything. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who doesn't have the patience for it. But you're OK playing something slow-paced with lots of reading and intricate puzzle solving, then by all means, go for it.

More of the same but some cool new things with a few annoying things as well [you'll know when you encounter them - suffers from console "do this objective over and over and over and over until you either figure it out or manage to get lucky"]

The STALKER games have more episodic scares imo. A lot of times you're fighting other humans but there are places were you are fighting mostly mutants, poltergeists etc. STALKER Shadow of Chernobyl had a creepyish part where you battle poltergeists in an old lab

I played Left for Dead 2 last year. I bought Left for Dead 1 and didn't realize its almost the same as LFD2 (single player).

I already own Borderlands: GOTY on my steam account. I want to buy a 4-pack to gift to friends. Steam isn't letting me buy it, because I already have it. If I create a new Steam account, can I gift all 4 copies to friends or others that are interested in buying it?

You SHOULD be able to purchase it all as a gift, but I just tried to do the same and the gift button is greyed out. Seems like a bug to me so I'm not sure what you can do about it unfortunately. Might have to just buy separate copies for your friends and not get the 4-pack discount.

Unfortunately that is not a bug. It is something people have complained about on the Steam forums for sometime and will hopefully be addressed sometime in the future. No way around it either. You can't buy the 4 pack on another Steam account and gift all 4 of them either, because 1 of the copies goes to the count that purchased the pack. So best bet is, if you are IRL friends with one of the people you wanted to gift it too either have them buy it and give them the money or see if they will let you log into their account to do the purchase and take care of it. Neither is ideal sadly.

Overlord II anyone?

I played it without playing the first. I really enjoyed it, especially the semi-dark humor. Not a complicated game, but fun and with a good storyline. Minion controls can be a little buggy some times, but it's not a game breaker.
