So, apparently suiciding in TF2 doesn't make you drop gifts like the guide says? I play with the bots but my team keeps winning before the third one drops.

Gifts aren't going to drop every time.

Also, are you the only one on your server? Remember to host your own 1-person server so you don't have to deal with anyone else.

To speed things up, open the developer console with the ~ key, and type "mp_disable_respawn_times 1". Then type "bind k kill". Now if you press k over and over, you'll die instantly.

How do you easily locate these "ninja" sales?

Most 'ninja sales' seem to simply be titles that are on sale as part of the package or publisher sales, which have 'thousands' of titles on sale.

Outside the big sales, I've seen them put things on sale that are listed in the 'see all sale items' list. (It's not up during this sale).

That worked, for some reason they weren't dropping with other bots.

Nevertheless, after picking up the 5th gift box, I realized it wasn't going to update.

You'll get the achievement, but you won't get the prize yet. Wait until Steam has actually activated it.

Definitely no achievement - got 5 box drops and nothing happened.

Yea, checked the list on TF2 achievements. When I did L4D2 it worked, no gift in steam inventory but the achievement did pop up.

I'd be careful. I traded with my kid this morning (coupon for coupon) and ever since doing that my entire inventory has disappeared. My son's too. We know we got the achievement (our number went up) but when we go into the inventory page now it's completely blank. And all the F5ing in the world doesn't change that.

The Steam inventory system has been shitting itself ever since the sale started. I wouldn't even worry about it. I did a trade earlier today, and my inventory got bugged again for like the 17th time. These things will fix themselves; just give it some time.
