DNF and Portal 2 should be down to $20 by christmas sale, right? If not more? As well as perhaps other games that are recent as of now? Dungeon Siege 3, etc.

Good mix of games for somebody starting out. Do you have a console as well, and have you played the first Mass Effect? If not I suggest you do as the story is a huge part of the series. There's also a lot of perks for importing your save from the previous game other than story effects. I think you'd be better off not jumping right into the 2nd if you are.
I do have a console (PS3). Haven't played the first Mass Effect, and a friend suggested the same thing to me. I'll probably just shelf #2 until #1 goes on a DD again.

This is what I am banking on. I almost grabbed both DNF and Portal 2, but I figured by the time I get around to them there will be another sale and they will be even cheaper.

I'd be willing to bet DNF is $10 during the Christmas sale, and maybe even the Black Friday sale. Hell, with how quickly it went to half off, I wouldn't be surprised to see a $5 sale at Christmas.

I wouldn't be surprised to see DNF and Portal 2 both at $10-15 for a holiday sale daily deal.

Glad I held off on them. I almost grabbed portal 2, but then I read on here that Valve games usually drop pretty quick, and I have 3 RPG's I need to finish. Lot's of time.

Life is boring without Steam deals. I keep checking for stuff to buy, and there's nothing.

That was what I was thinking -- at first it was no, no, get away from my wallet... now all of the excitement of seeing which ones are up today is all gone.

Battered PC gamer: "But I still love Steam sales!"

My Xmas wish list so far for $15 from Steam:
- DNF
- Dungeon Siege 3
- Dragon Age 2 (might be too soon for a complete pack though, no sense in buying it before they finish releasing DLC)

Dungeon Siege is already reduced to $30 at Amazon, so I fully expect to be admiring Katarina's cleavage again in early 2012

Yep. The key with steam is not having a back-log. They really get you with the cheap games, because most people buy games that they wouldn't even be remotely interested in, simply because they are <$10.

I disagree. The key to Steam IS having a backlog. That way when games are in the $15+ range you can pass on them much more easily unless you really really wanted that game and then pick the game up during the next sale for even cheaper

This x1000. I don't need to play the latest stuff, and a huge backlog of both steam games and physical copies so I can probably wait until DNF and Portal 2 are $5, and even then I'll still have games to play.

I disagree with the first part but agree with the second part. They certainly do get people with cheap games because of the deal but when I know I have plenty of games to get to I won't jump at new releases.

Exactly. I have a 100 game backlog, but I never pay more than $10 for a game. I don't need to when I can just play other games until the ones I want fall below $10. The other upside is that you don't have to stay on the cutting edge of computer hardware to play your games. I can play 1 or 2 year old games @ 1920x1200 with all the details maxed with an i7 & gtx580.

Now that I've discovered steam sales, I will pretty much buy new games over $10 in 2 circumstances:
1. A specific game franchise I like with a storyline I'm interested in. Dragon Age 3 will be an example, although what they did to DA2 wasn't exactly inspiring. I liked it myself but I can see why people feel they dumbed it down. Still, DA3 if it continues the Darkspawn/Warden story is auto-buy...
2. Multiplayer games. It's good to get in on those in the first 2 or 3 weeks. Especially if it's an MMO.
