3.5 million cap hit, 2 million in deferred bonus that hit's the following years cap....way better than giving Cleary 3 years 9 Million
That's not as terrible as I first thought.

All I saw originally was;

According to TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger, the long-time Ottawa captain made the Senators aware of his decision on Thursday night and will sign a one-year, $5.5 million contract with the Detroit Red Wings.

A lot of stupid contracts being thrown around with a lot of stupid money.

Columbus is repeatedly one of the dumbest teams ever FA Frenzy. 7 years to Horton. LOLOLOLOL

Toronto is pretty stupid too.

All year long supposed Hawks fans on other sites I visit were practically begging the team to get an extension done with Stalberg, and now a lot of those same use names are taking turns trying to swipe at him on his way out.

I liked Stalberg, and I think he's great pickup for an offensively challenged team. He'll loosen things up every time he's on the ice. I'm sad to see him go.

But it is what it is - Q doesn't like him. That's how life works. We've all had superiors that just don't take to us for no good reason.

Reports said he wasn't happy with ice time and Q did not like his work ethic on the defensive end.

Hard to get ice time with a deep team. I do wish him the best, I liked him when he played. Such is pro sports though.

Anaheim trades Bobby Ryan.

It's really looking like the Hawks vs. the Blues in the West.

A guy who's career high in points is 66 gets a 25 mil deal from Tampa Bay.

This was not the time to need FAs.

Wow the Preds sure did spend a lot of money to fill out the bottom 12 today.

Stalberg is Ok but the rest are typical Preds signings. They now have too many forwards so hopefully Poile has been working on a trade somewhere.

I've got to be honest though, it's starting to look like they really just need to be terrible for a couple of years. Seems like that's the best way to get scoring long term. Continually getting 8th seed in the playoffs is great for saying you make the playoffs but shit for getting quality wingers in the draft.

so much crazy stuff today.

Iginla signing in Boston is too hilarious.

Alfie in Detroit...wtf to him.

Oilers make some moves and signings that i think will take time to see how badly we overpaid...

No cap space!

There is still cap space as you can go over 10% during the off season, along with bonus money they can defer to next year. What is scary is they still need to re-sign the RFAs which will give them 14 or 15 forwards. Someone is on the move.

the price on some of these guys are ridiculous. Boyd Gordon at $3mil/year?!?!? Some other mediocre players too.

You know I've noticed the same thing...as much as I made fun of the Pens GM earlier, it makes me wonder if they have already been given projections by the league and anticipate a large growth in cap space so they are locking up players now for what 2 years from now will be cheap.

I think Sweet Lou has lost his fucking mind. Did anyone catch the Clowe contract? He scored *** 3 *** goals last year.

Honorable mention so far go to the Clarkson and Horton deals. And I'm still trying to figure out what exactly Dallas got in that trade. Boston is a first class organization in winning trades. The Kessel deal just keeps paying.

So far, I've only seen a few deals that I like. Scuderi signed a very reasonable deal in Pittsburgh, who badly needs him - he's one of the most underrated D-men in the league. Emery signed below market in Philly - if there's any honor in pro sports, it might be Ray Emery, for the opportunity the Flyers originally gave him to get back into the NHL.

I like the Streit and Lecavalier contracts because I'm a homer - in all honestly, the annual amounts are very reasonable for the player, but TOO many years for some old players. I'm guessing that Philly knows that Vinny is a rubber stamp trade back to TB in a couple years, or the cap will have grown enough to bury both deals.

Clowe is a little overpaid, but he's been a better player than Clarkson over his career and signed for less money and less years. And Clarkson turned down a higher offer! I'm not concerned about performance, my only concern with Clowe is health.

He also got Ryder at a good price and straight up stole Schneider. That more than makes up for overpaying Clowe. The Devils definitely got better.

What did Holmgren do to fix the Flyers' terrible defense? He replaced your good starting goaltender with one of the worst in the league and added a backup who was only good playing for the Blackhawks against non-playoff teams. He added an old defenseman who doesn't play defense and Lecavalier at admittedly a good price.

Good luck winning every game 7-6.

You're as big a homer as I am. Let's get that out of the way so we can continue seeing our teams as better than they are.

Clowe's contract is ridiculous. This is a guy who has topped out at 24 goals and 60 points 3 years ago, scored 3 goals last year, and has had multiple concussions. I wanted this guy in Philly as a 3rd line winger, but not for 5 yrs and 25M. I get that he was Plan B to Clarkson, who I think is a very comparable player, but who probably wasn't signing anywhere but Toronto anyway - and he got overpaid for his production, too. You dodged a bullet on that one.

Schneider was had for a fair price. He's in the Bernier and Bishop category - a backup who may be ready to break out. If it works out, that'll put you guys at like 3 decades of stability in the crease.

If you think Bryzgalov was good, though, dude. Come on. He wasn't even average, unless you find a GAA > 2.5 and a SV% south of .9 acceptable. He won't even be on an NHL roster next season, and probably not a KHL one either. Mason's a reclamation project, but he's still young and was once good. Maybe it works out, maybe it doesn't, but the long term future of that team is better off without Bryzgalov's years and cap hit. He had to go.

Philly has more work to do on D. They needed a guy who could move the puck and make a breakout pass, and that's Streit. They gave him too many years, but I'm ok with the dollars. The rest is going to depend on the development of the younger players, plus whoever comes via trade, since right now they're over the cap and at the 50 contract limit - so some players are going to go, and the return is hopefully going to be on defense.

Schneider was the starter this year, and was top 5 in the league in save percentage.

Bryzgalov was good before he got to the Flyers. Bobrovsky won the Vezina when he left the Flyers. This is not a coincidence. If there's a team that can make Steve Mason better, it's not the Flyers.

Bryzgalov looked good in Phoenix's system. His teammates there more or less threw him under the bus the second he was gone. Big red flag. It was worth a shot, but when the dude is ducking pucks it's time to move on.

I agree that Philly isn't the place to improve a goalie. Maybe it'll happen, maybe it won't. Jeff Reese somehow got Leighton to be good for a little while until the wheels fell off, so he's not totally incompetent. But the market is a pressure cooker. We'll see if Bobrovsky can keep it up. He did it in Columbus - we could have been having this same conversation a few years ago talking about Mason.

Given that you and I are going to talk shit most of the season, do you want to just get going now with a friendly bet? A case of Tastykakes vs whatever you want to put up for the team that finishes higher in the regular season standings? I live in Maine but I think I can score some Krimpets.

Sure, I'll take that bet. I do think both teams improved, I just think the Devils improved in ways they needed to improve and the Flyers didn't.

Flyers need to address the D. They just signed Gustafsson to 1yr/1M (more than his RFA qualifier), so that's 9 D under contract and at the 50 limit with Petr Straka signing today. A trade has to be coming. It's not the NHL offseason before the Flyers make a controversial trade.

That's the spirit. What are we betting? A case of tastykakes either way?
