I'm against adding more things to the "Referee's discretion" list. There's too many gray areas for the officials as it is. You can't assume the ref is going to know what a player's intent is.

I'm not against enforcing it like an automatic icing, but then that will be abused like crazy. Taking an icing penalty is far better than having to face a good possession team at the end of a long shift. Sure you can't change, but you get a breather, and if it's a bad one, the coach just calls a timeout.

Maybe if they made it so the ref grabs the puck and drops it within 15 seconds, instead of this well sometimes it's right away, other times it's like a minute later. Then dish out a delay of game penalty if somebody breaks their stick in the face off circle as some players have done to buy time.

You can't, and sometimes they'll get it wrong, and that's still a lot better than penalizing a guy for playing a bouncing puck. The reality is that pretty much every call is discretionary. This is one where the lack of discretion results in undeserved penalties all the time, and it happens at critical points in games.

That's why you give the ref discretion. It's the same as when a guy knocks the net off the moorings, they know when it's done intentionally to get a stoppage. That's delay of game, and it's discretionary.

Or just drop the puck and let the guy play without a stick.

Yep, age 25 is the cutoff. And Brunner was 26 at the start of the season.
