2012 Ford Fusion SEL 3.0 - My impressions after five days and 2,000 miles.

I picked up a 2012 Ford Fusion 3.0 V6 SEL from Enterprise this past Wednesday evening to make a round trip to Florida. Having not driven the current gen Fusion but loving the original Fusion my expectations were high and I was not disappointed.

Let me get this out of the way first. Ford claims 28 MPG highway for the 3.0L engine. This is bupkus. The first leg of my trip was 615 miles and I achieved 33.2 MPG traveling at 71 MPH with the cruise set the entire way (well, 98% of the way let's say, periodic slow downs for traffic and speeds up for passing occurred). This was my own calculation, not the car's MPG meter which stated 34'ish the entire way.

The second leg of my trip was 187 miles and I cruised at 60 MPH (state highways) and achieved 34.4 MPG. The rest of the trip yielded similar results with the lowest being Friday/Sat which was all city driving which yielded 25.7 for both days combined over about 125 miles.

And about that little 3.0 Durtec. So, going into this rental I already had quite a bit of experience with this engine's ancestor, the original 3.0L DOHC Duratec from the 1990s which I had in a Ford Taurus. I drove that car about 150K with zero issues and it's nice to see the engine still humming along almost 20 years later. I had read several reviews stating that the 240 HP version in the Fusion was underpowered and lagging behind competitors. That might be true regarding comparing the car to it's competitors, I'm not really sure for most cars. I do know the 2011 Avenger has a very slick 280 or so HP V6. Focusing on the Fusion though, the 3.0 is no slouch and whoever wrote the reviews I read must have not given the car the beans because it has no problems moving right along. According to Edmunds the car weighs 3,200 pounds and that's probably right as the car felt very light. Is it a rocket ship? No, is it a sports car? No. Is it a pretty darn quick car? Yes. And at WOT it makes a nice noise too.

On to the interior. Front leg room is lacking. I'm 6.0' tall and when I have my son's car seat positioned behind the driver seat in order to keep his dangling legs from touching the seat back I have to be so far forward my knees impact the corners of the central dash pillar. The seats are phenomenal though and offered the right amount of sportiness, support and comfort. After spending days in the car I can't say I was tired of them. They're perfect. The climate controls are simple enough to use but are set low down. My wife was able to see them easily but for me with me increased height and the angle I sit it was hard to see the symbol on the buttons, especially when driving.

Sync is awesome. We all knew that. My experience confirms it. Skipping this sections.

What about ride and handling? The ride was noticeably harder than the Malibu 2LT sedans I have rented but the car felt more planted. Taking highway on and off ramps at plus posted speeds was quite fun. Low speed cornering in town was equally fun. I'm not sure but I think this car has electric power steering but road feel was excellent. If it's true, I can't see that it matters. Back to the ride. On the highway, it's just about perfect, the right amount of road feel, the right amount of isolation. Around town things were good but felt more jarring than I would like on less than perfect roads.

Overall, I was supremely impressed with the car. If you're looking for a mid to small size sedan for hauling the family around or your coworkers this is a fantastic car to do it in and unlike many cars in this class, it's not dull and boring (looks at Accord/Camry). If you guys would like photos I have the car until Wednesday (I loved my weekly rental rates) and would be happy to post them but Google can provide the same result.

By the way, the that press photo is the exact car I rented, same color, wheels, etc.

I'm on my second 1st gen fusion (the first one my dumbass brother totaled on ice) and I still love them after 3 years. My plan has always been since I bought my current 06 SEL that whenever this one dies (at 120k with nothing but oil changes since 70k) to replace it with a second gen with the 4cyl/new 6 speed. What I love about first gen is I find the i4 plenty sporty enough for me to have fun wringing it out all day every day, basically a super tossable car on good tires and a great driver. And the 5 speed is so much more fun no matter what. Makes it feel like I'm throwing a miata around a track all day.

The 2nd gen improves on my only gripes with the car. There's a 6 speed, which the first gen really needs since it takes about 3500rpm to hit ~80 on the turnpike, which kills mileage. Take that along with my heavy foot about town and I actually only get like 24mpg average. The automatic first gen though is way better, averages 32mpg (and I had a lighter foot back then too). It only takes ~2700rpm to get to 80. They lowered the ratio of 5th way way down. And I don't know why. It's not like the manual wouldn't be able to pass or go up steep hills without downshifting. When I had the auto I had a long commute up loads of hills. Long, steep, and long steep ones alike, all at 75-80mph, and it never had to unlock as near as I could ever tell. And I did I'd guess 80% of my passing at 75+mph without unlocking, and that has continued even easier with the 5 speed. It really needs the same ratio as 5th in the auto as a 6th. But really that's not as big of a deal as it would seem, it's so much more fun. It's my manual tax

And hey, I sure wouldn't mind the 15 extra hp either, or updated interior/sync

Then they started coming out with ecoboost stuff, and ecoboost for the Fusion, and the plan changed to at least wait for an ecoboost manual, preferable the larger ecoboost if possible.

THEN they unveiled the awesome 2013 Fusion, which I hope hope hope gets a 2.0 ecoboost (or even 3.5 ecoboost would be awesome if they decide to sell it), so now that's my plan

I like the current gen Fusion, and the 2013 looks to be pure sex on wheels. So hot. Ford is just hitting home runs left and right, now.

I also think the current Fusion is great looking. Probably the best looking car in that segment. I have yet to drive one but I've been meaning to.

I think the Mazda 6 looks better, but the Fusion is probably #2 or #3 depending on how much you like the Sonata's styling.

I have a 2012 Fusion Sport (3.5L V6) and it is definitely very fun to drive. I've never gotten mileage much better than expected, though, which is I think maybe 26 mpg highway.

The current Fusion is kind of meh. The 2013 Fusion might well be my next sled though.

This. I still dont like the interior, even on the 2013. But the exterior styling is nice, and the hybrid mileage is just too good to ignore for a decent looking car that is reasonably priced.

I'm curious have you been in one or just going off photos?

I personally have been a big fan of the last two generations of Fords. They have been really trying to step up the interior materials and the fit and finish of their cars.

I remember my family owning a 1987 ford mustang that thing was made sooo poorly and my family hasn't looked at a ford since. Now.. with all the rave reviews we can fast forward 2012 the ford cars are actually really intriguing

Which generation Mazda 6 are you talking about? I like the upcoming one and the previous one, but not the current one for styling.

A current gen? Yeah I have been in plenty. My cousin is a Ford master mechanic or whatever and drives a loaded Fusion V6 SEL black/black.

The 2013 - I have just seen photos/video.

I like (and own...so biased) the current one. Haven't seen any shots of the next one, though.

We've got the 2.5L I4 models at work. They're decent enough cars but they have zero pickup. They've got the old chunky Ford styling too. The 2013 Fusion is sexy looking through. I might head down to the Toronto Auto Show to check them out.

I have rented a couple of current-gen Fusions and always been impressed. Of course they have always been loaded/leather/big engine/etc. which definitely helps. I like the interior quite a bit, and they have always felt quite peppy. I would definitely consider one for my next car.

Probably 2.3's?

IIRC the 2.5L Duratec was added for 2010MY, so they should be the newer style Fusion if they have the 2.5. They should not seem slow with a 0-60 time in the mid 8 second range.

My dad is looking to possibly replace his 04 Camry with a Fusion. The new one coming out would be nice but outside the budget. Now if his Camry hangs on for another 1-2 years, then he could probably get a newer Fusion. But given the miles on his Camry we are figuring something is going to give out before too much longer. It has 280k miles and it has developed a tendency to not want to let go of 1st gear when cold.

I have a 2010 Sport which replaced my 2008 SEL... fantastic cars. Fun to drive and zero quality issues to report on either one. Looking forward to the 2013 edition as it may have to be an upgrade in a year or two.
