Hey all!

Hopefully someone can provide me some insight. I updated my son's 2012 Nexus 7 to 4.4 Kitkat through OTA and then updated to 5.0.2 Lollipop and now on 5.1. I did them all back to back.

My problem is that it still seems like the tablet is on Kitkat, but it shows that it is on version 5.1 in the status. IE it has absolutely no material design, no google now.

It does have the new users feature, though.

I'm confused as to what the heck is going on and how I can remedy this. Should I basically install a factory image, perhaps the ota screwed up?

I suspect that I screwed it all up by doing a factory reset on the tablet after doing all the updates...

Thanks!

What happens exactly, when you try to bring up Google Now? (Swipe up from the bottom of the screen, for a Nexus device). There's an opt in that you have to do once.

Also, do you have a Google account set up in Settings > Accounts? If so, then you could open the Play Store app to make sure all of Google's apps are up to date (via the 'My apps' section).

Material design in apps like GMail / Chrome would all come independently from the OS version (KitKat vs Lollipop). Even on KitKat, a lot of Google's apps were updated to use material design.

If none of that helps, the factory images are easy to install for Nexus devices so that's an option too, but keep in mind you'd lose all of your data that you don't back up first.

You probably just don't have the google now launcher. Some older devices don't have it. Happened to me on my Nexus 4 with Kitkat. Updated from JB and everything looked the same aside from the google apps. Which I was fine with.

It's what gmaster456 says.

Although it still shouldn't look exactly like KitKat. The settings app itself is full-on Material Design. Same with the clock. Pull-down as well.

I don't own a 2012 N7, but those are things inherent to Lollipop, unless the 2012 model can't handle the animations. My 2013 N7 is on 5.0.2 (no 5.1 release yet), and it's definitely got Material Design baked in.
