We are days away from the new season tipping off and it looks to be a good one. I know basketball is a second tier sport on this board but there is usually some good discussion to be found.

I'm struggling to nail down my top five teams for the League Pass Broadband. Miami, OKC and Houston are surefire in. Chicago, Golden State and Washington are vying for the last two spots, and the trade today for Gortat and Shannon Brown is helping the Wizards cause.

The Heat bring back mostly the same roster, minus a small role Mike Miller and plus a small role Greg Oden. With the extra games they have logged after three straight Finals appearances, the Heat really need to be healthy come playoff time this year. Mainly Wade. The Bulls have talked about running on fumes by the last year of their threepeats, the number of games logged over other teams is just incredible. If Wade is giving 10-15 points a night in the playoffs the Heat will not get that third straight ring.

The Spurs mostly are holding the same roster too, though aging. They added Bellinelli and are hoping for growth from Leonard, though I still see him as too raw to be such a difference maker this year. OKC seems to have dropped off losing their third scorer in Kevin Martin and offering no real replacement. Westbrook's injury will affect their seeding as he will miss a good chunk of the season. Durant will be a monster in the meantime.

Everyone else around the league seems to be on the upswing though, making a run at the crown.

Chicago is bringing back a 100% healthy Rose. They need to make roster moves to get over the hump I think, but Rose alone is enough to put them in the ECF. The Nets won't be fun to watch I don't think but you can't deny their depth. The Pacers bring back Granger (though they might move him) and added a decent bench. The East is actually going to be stronger than the West this year.

The Rockets clearly upgraded and still could make a move or two. McHale is going to use his pieces properly and the Rockets are my pick to make the Finals run out West. The Clippers made roster moves to get some shooters and stretch the defense, and just like Houston now have a coach that will use pieces properly. Golden State is really intriguing with Iggy as the main addition. Just like the Rockets and Clippers, they bring great coaching to the table though I think they are still too green to be a real threat. WCF is possible though.

Overall the top teams are getting better as the bottom teams are starting early at tanking to try and clean up on the 2014 draft class. This may signify a change in how the NBA does business over the next few years. The more restrictive cap and repeater tax, coupled with GMs who aren't complete morons running more teams now (with the understanding that it is better to be in rebuilding status than trapped as an eighth seed), it may be common to see better teams get better short term while crappy teams plan long term by dropping assets.

Thoughts? Opinions?

Good OP. I tend to watch and enjoy and not really analyze but suffice to say I'm pretty excited for Bulls/Heat and Clippers/Lakers tomorrow night, though the latter could very well be a complete wash lol.

Been looking forward to Oct 29 far more than I did Sep 8.

Damn, after the 2012 Finals it seemed like Miami and OKC would be the gladiators for the next 3-4 years.

Hindsight is 20/20, but at this point trading Harden just seems incomprehensibly stupid.

Man, I did my fantasy draft last night and realized how much I had missed in the off season. Excited for the West this year since it seems the Lakers should be terrible and there are some very fun other teams to watch (Rockets, Warriors, Nugs, Clips).

I think Howard will hold that team back. To me, he is not a good player and is his own worst enemy. When I heard he was mad about Orlando letting somebody wear #12, then I was like: "this dude is probably the dumbest player in the NBA"....all that skill, especially defensively, but his maturity isn't anywhere to be found.

Not enough basketballs to pass around for all the ball hogs in Houston.
Paul George probably my favorite player right now in the nba. He's a clutch version of Mcgrady.
My team the mavs should score with anyone but defense and rebounding will ultimately doom them.
Spurs fall off this year. Age catches up and they are a first round exit.

I've been saying the Spurs are too old for the last 6 years, and every year they notch 50+ wins like clockwork. I'm done. I'm no longer willing to say the Spurs are past their prime until Duncan, Parker and Ginobili actually retire or Gregg Popovich dies just for the opportunity to stare down God.

My Blazers got better on the bench (although they literally could not have gotten worse without fielding a couple toddlers), and their core group is good, but I have my doubts that Aldridge stays with them as they're bound to be another middling team and he, like Clyde before him, is a superstar searching for a contender. LA leaves, Portland tanks, misses the playoff and gets another high lottery pick (again). Such a shame that Portland causes knees to explode; the idea of Brandon Roy, Greg Oden, LaMarcus Aldridge and Nic Batum in 2008 seemed like absolute gold.

I've been watching the Jalen Rose & Bill Simmons nba preview for the past few weeks. Simmons put Chicago as the #1 seed, Miami as #2, and S.A. as #3.

The most interesting thing said in the hours of youtube was Rose predicting that once Durant's contract is up in OKC, he'll sign with Houston to play with his friend Harden. That would be a multi championship team for sure.

I'm contemplating NBA league pass this year. Anybody have experience with it?

At the time, I didn't think it was a debacle but many did. The cliche of not trading a dollar for 4 quarters...

OKC could've extended Harden and amnestied the utterly useless Kendrick Perkins. And if the money is that tight (as it appears to be for Memphis), then they still could've traded Harden during this season or thereafter.

I don't know what all the fuss over D-Rose is about. You have solid improvement from Jimmy Butler, Noah and Gibson. But isn't this otherwise the same team that goes 110% during the regular season and was easily brushed aside in the 2011 playoffs? Where's the secondary creator they desperately need to hang with the Heat?

preslove, I'm awful at predictions but with the luxury tax being so punitive, it's very hard to see any front office putting together 3 max-level players going forward. Only Mikhail Prokhorov has the stomach and the bankroll for that type of tax bill, although the Lakers tried to keep Howard at all costs. Cuban fancies himself too much of a businessman to tolerate shipping tens of millions of dollars to the league office as a reward for trying to be great.

Even the Heat who may 3-peat will be staring at an awfully expensive roster next summer. Their ideal scenario would be if their Big-3 all opt out, D-Wade takes a very cap-friendly contract and Chris Bosh finds another GM willing to pay him.

I've had versions of it for about a decade now. I had the regular league pass back in the day that has "all" the teams and games on TV. What you don't get are the ESPN, TNT and ABC games. Quite often the best matchups each week are going to be on those channels so you really only watch the league pass if you are a junkie. Like me.

I currently just do the league pass broadband. I select five teams that I want to see and I get to see "all" of their games minus the major networks. I can go online at any point during the season and stream any of the games. There is an upgraded version that allows you to see all the teams for more money. Different versions and pricing levels allow you to watch on TV, internet, tablet, etc.

The most annoying part of it is that you end up hearing the local (biased) announcers for so many games. They do have a thing where you can tune into the local radio broadcast for audio for either team so that helps. Since I do the pick five broadband package I try and even out teams East and West so that games don't overlap too much and I get to watch more basketball each night.

I generally agree with this sentiment which is why I don't consider the Bulls to be real threats to the crown, injuries to other teams excepted.

If you add Rose to their roster which was good enough for a lucky bounce to get to the second round, they should play in the ECF. It really isn't a different team than Miami easily dispatched a few years back in the playoffs. You can point at the growth of Butler, but he hasn't grown into anything that good yet and he takes minutes/time from Deng. That means anything you gain in Butler you automatically take that off of what Deng used to give you.

The Bulls have had injury struggles for years. Aside from the devastating Rose injury, Deng and Noah seem to be injury plagued players. If they even trot out their full lineup on the way to a 4-2 playoff exit at the hands of the Heat that will be a major victory. Some guys have just shown they can't stay on the floor.

They need to make a big trade for another elite scorer. Boozer has to go, even if it means losing Noah, Deng or Butler in the process (nobody will touch Gibson's terrible contract). Rose needs another star next to him, not a marginal all star. The East is way too stacked this year to survive it virtually alone.

I still would pencil them in as the number one seed for the very reason you mention.

Don't the Bulls still have their amnesty? There's always been rumors surrounding Boozer, but the problem is it's hard to upgrade their big rotation. There's a lot of problems for the Bulls, particularly what they do when Rose isn't on the floor - they need another elite creator, which is what makes the Heat so deadly.

I think the bigger question in the East is, how much longer can LBJ go without a significant injury. At some point, something will go wrong - might not be this year, but as these extended seasons and the Olympic play build up for him, it can get bad. The Heat can cope without Wade depending on how long LBJ's body holds up in carrying the team.

My girlfriend has her parents' tv code that works for tnt, it looks like (have to check tonight). So, that should give me good coverage, leaving out the odd abc game and espn. That leave espn to pirate streams, and I am looking at getting a better tv antenna and should be able to abc local before the playoffs next year.

Is there a lot of buffering? How's the picture quality? I have a computer connected to a 40' 1080p screen that I sit close enough to to use it for the internet, too.

IIRC, the amnesty provision ended sometime this summer, around the Mike Miller amnesty. Boozer and Perkins were two guys that really should have been amnestied. Boozer's contract and performance aren't terrible, with $32M left over two years, but amnesty was the way to go. The Bulls owner is a notorious cheapskate though and apparently amnesty was never on the table. Ugh.

I'd be shocked if LBJ has a significant injury. He just seems physically indestructible and his training is legendary. As long as he plays on the wing and stays bigger than most guys matched up on him I think he can continue that.

Lebron picks his spots so well and uses strength and speed versus quickness to get to his spots. Anyone can go down with injury, but Lebron just isn't injury prone. I don't know if you have been catching the Simmons/Rose NBA previews that preslove mentioned above, but Simmons agrees that fatigue is going to be a huge factor for the Heat this year.

I'm still much much much much more concerned with Wade gimping around again.

The first week or two of the season they do a free trial of the league pass. You should get a good feel for quality. I rarely have buffering issues between either the league pass and ESPN3 streaming but that could change depending on your network provider.

Well neither game went as expected last night lol. I was hoping the Bulls would make it closer but that game got out of hand much too quickly and easily with all the turnovers they were giving away.

And Laker's cast of mostly nobodies pulled off the upset, though I don't think they can count on almost 50% 3point shooting on a regular basis. The up tempo play was a lot of fun to watch though, regardless of Reggie Miller's soapboxing lol.

Man, tnt's online streaming is the best I've ever experienced. Mostly hd and only a couple 1 or 2 second buffering stoppages.
