I understand that TV shows, especially network ones, cut corners with plot and believability, but Hostages' foundational premise takes this to a ridiculous extreme.

Which wasn't even the biggest problem, shows with crazy premises can be very successful. Three words: The Walking Dead. Even if you could buy the premise of Hostages, the show still sucks. The writing is dull, the characters utterly unlikeable (even the supposedly good guys) and every second of it is an old TV cliche piled on top of another old TV cliche. None of it is in the least bit interesting or original. It's not surprising that more people are not watching, it's shocking that anyone is still watching.

Totally agree. By season 4 I just got bored with Ted and felt like the Tedcentric eps were the worst.

Don't worry too just because How I Met Your Mother is ending because CBS has ordered a pilot for How I Met Your Dad! As much as that sounds like a cruel joke, it's not.

Anyway, I think the problem with Ted is just that he comes across as pathetic.

Californication cancelled. Final season of 12 eps to air.

Scandal dropped down to 18 shows for this season, blame the baby bump.

Terminator heading back to the boob tube.

WHAT?! That's been one of my favorite shows the past couple years. There is only one Hank Moody!

Although, I suppose it's time. I'd rather it get cancelled than drawn out like Weeds did.

Californication is just a bad T&A show. Prefer Dream On.

At least based on what I read, it wasn't so much of cancelled but rather ending. I think the show has been going on long enough. I mean... the IGN article says that the series hit an all-time ratings high with season 6.

Raising Hope

The Neighbors needs to go fast, Raising Hope is witty and comes as close to a Malcolm in the Middle comedy as I can find but I'd be shocked if it lasts another season, Dads just isn't funny, fucking LOVE Hostages but I'm thinking the story-line will play out in 1 season anyway, Mentalist I don't watch but thought it was popular

Have you watched The Neighbors since its lame debut? It actually got better. I'd put it on a par with Raising Hope, in that both are better than most current network sitcoms, which admittedly isn't saying all that much.

In a rather unique twist, a miniseries has been cancelled (The Assets). Expect it to show up as a time filler over the summer.

Some of the spring session new shows look to be DOA already, Enlisted and Killer Women.

Not sure if this was posted, but both Boardwalk Empire and the Newsroom will be ending after their next seasons.

Really bummed about the Newsroom. Boardwalk Empire .... eh. I should like it, but it's one of those shows where I have to be in the mood to watch it. Because of that, I'm still only in season 1 :whiste:

If Netflix keeps pumping out shows like House of Cards and Orange is the New Black, HBO sure as heck needs to get its act together and start replacing some of these shows it's cancelling. No, I have not seen the first episode of True Detective yet ... but that's only one!

That show had an interesting idea at the outset but it has become almost unwatchable. They really need to get the mother in there and shut it down.

This season has been half-good. And by that I mean .... I really like the episodes the mother is ACTUALLY in -- where she meets Lily, and Barney (the best one IMO), and Marshall. I liked the one episode (so far, should be another) wrapping up the slap-bet.

Other than that, it's very clear they've just been treading water the last few seasons, trying to make as much money as they can off of it. I was hoping the majority of this last season would be the mother's integration into the group, but aside from the few individual episodes, it doesn't look like that's going to happen.

This season has been incredibly bad and is setting new "jumping the shark" records.

If you ignore the holiday season where all ratings seem to dip, I don't think it's really shed that many viewers. The episode yesterday still had 8.57m viewers (link).

Of course, I have no background / knowledge in the ratings system and aside from knowing that 8.57m isn't far off the average viewers shown on Wikipedia.

Boardwalk Empire was getting old. The stories have become more of the same and it's probably best that they're getting one season to wrap it up right.

Disappointed about The Newsroom. Even with the typical Sorkin proselytizing it was intelligent enough to be worth watching. But the handwriting was on the wall for that, HBO and Sorkin have not gotten along well right from the beginning and they had a lot of issues with production for season 2. Even getting a third season was touch-and-go for a while.
