Get close to 50 in 39 games and i'll be impressed
You mean when flopping whales were supposedly goalies and players stick-checking was called defense?
Look at some of these goals: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EZMWtuJha4A I've seen better play from my men's league these days. Please don't equate the two generations, I beg you.
I'm all for smaller goalie pads...
First, if that were the case, Ovechkin could score 100 goals.
Second, if that's the only reason you think goalies didn't make those saves, or why shooters got open in the first place, then I'll have to leave you in your own world.
Otherwise... oy vey. Gretzky was a great player, when compared to players of his era. I don't know why people think he's better than players today. The game is not played on paper.
Gretzky would be the best offensive player in the league today and it wouldn't be close, he wouldn't be scoring 200 points or 92 goals but he would easily lead the league in scoring.
There's no way he skates around everybody like he used to because there is more systems play today, and goalies who don't let in nearly as many softies. A player with great vision and possession like Crosby (because of his strong lower body) can't even run away with it. What exactly did Gretzky do or show that makes you think he would?
Besides, that's not the point when you said show me 50 in 39. That is not possible even for Gretzky today, as you just admitted to. 2 different eras, which is the whole point.
"Systems" are lame. You should read the article Larionov wrote about Red Army, he shits on modern "systems"

In Russia right now, there are four or five Datsyuks playing in the KHL who never got their chance. Sergei Mozyakin led the KHL in scoring last season and was in the scoring race for most of his 20s. But he’s 33 now and nobody in America has ever heard of him. Why? Most North American coaches don’t have the patience for his style of play.
I roll my eyes whenever I hear people talk about how fast the game is now and how sophisticated the systems have become. Watching the game, does it really seem much faster? Does it really seem more advanced? We had a saying in the Soviet days that I wish more coaches and scouts would adopt today: It’s not how fast you skate, it’s how fast you think.
KHL? Somehow they score even less over there...
Systems don't make the game faster, it makes it tighter which means slower, fewer scoring chances. Defensive play - left-wing lock, F3 as the first backchecker, and all that jazz. Players are always defensively responsible. It results in a lot less free-wheeling because it simply doesn't work against it anymore. Watch the Gretzky goals or his assists... those guys do not get that wide open anymore. And even when they do, there's not a scrub goalie waving just an arm or leg at the shot these days. God, watch those videos... how many goals did Gretzky score with weak-ass shots. Sorry but it's true.
Went to the Wings/Rangers game last night, had pretty good seats.
Wings looked like total ass. No cohesion on the new lines. Pure luck + Jimmy Howard rescuing them over and over made it a close game.
Somehow they turned into pure awesome in the 4 on 4 and won in overtime.
I've keep meaning to go to the Joe one last time, but never get around to it. It was an exciting game though, but like you said they played pretty bad. Rangers played much better than them. Hopefully it was the team adjusting to Cole and Zidliky, and 1st game after a long road trip.

Gee, most rinks being at or near Olympic size might have something to do with it?
Don't argue with the professor, he knows about hockey than you ever will.
Wasn't the whole point of my arguing about systems that it makes defense more important and players like Gretzky wouldn't have the same free reign? Did you not get that? Then you go and link an article with him saying systems are supposed to make it faster but doesn't.
WHAT? That's not even arguing against me.
I think you need to read it a few more times.
On TV that place (The Joe) looked way less than sold out.Went to the Wings/Rangers game last night, had pretty good seats.

In the last 14 games, Philadelphia is 5-0-3 against current playoff teams while 0-5-1 against non-playoff teams.
oy!Henrik Zetterberg didn't score for the 15th straight game, marking the longest stretch of his career.
