The 3.0 TDI in the A6 is interesting. Over 400 ft/lbs of torque, 0-60 in 5.5 seconds and 38MPG.

Unfortunately the A4 won't be seeing the diesel in the USA for another 3 years.

If they release an A5 TDI in around mid 2014 I might consider it. Audi sedans are just so bland looking imo.

Can someone answer an honest question. What are the benefits of diesel in this case?

I don't see any eye popping numbers over the gas engine other than the price difference of diesel at gas stations here.

In town diesel will get you about 5MPG better than the gas equivalent and on the highway it's almost 10MPG better. In the case of the 3.0L diesel it's also *quite* fast. 5.5 second 0-60 with as much torque as most V8 pickup trucks *and* almost 40MPG.

Not according to Audi's website. These are of course the A6 because the A4 isn't available. Will it be that much different?

A6 Technical Specifications
2.0 TFSI®

EPA estimates | Capacities

City - 25 mpg
Highway - 33 mpg
Combined - 28 mpg

3.0 TFSI®

EPA estimates | Capacities

City - 18 mpg
Highway - 28 mpg
Combined - 22 mpg

3.0 TDI®

EPA estimates | Capacities

City - 24 mpg
Highway - 38 mpg
Combined - 29 mpg

Seems it worthwhile comparing the TDI to the 2.0 since the performance specs are nearly the same. The 3.0 TFSI seems like its in a different class, at least by the performance numbers, even though its the same size. Not to mention supercharged vs. turbocharged.

Like I said though, nothing eye popping about the diesel. Will the A4 really be that much different between the gas and diesel versions?

Edit: I guess the debate really is which gas engine to compare it to. Neither is really a good "direct" comparison and cases could be made to use either. But combined the 3.0's are still 7 mpg difference. That's pretty good I guess.

Of course the diesel gets more torque. That's like saying water is wet.

If they are using the same 2.0 & emission system as in the Passat TDI then you can expect upwards of 40-43MPG(not sure AWD drain on diesel economy) with some user observed milage close to 50MPG. In town is around 35MPG.

How's emissions compared to gasoline for this one? Any words on that? :/

CO2 is supposed to be better than many gassers. I'm sure the particulate (smog) is higher than gasoline but it's much improved over diesels of yesteryear.

The diesels will be cleaner for particulate because of their DPF compared to the now common DI gasonline engines; the DI gasoline engines IMO should have the gasoline PM testing exception removed given how dirty they are, if one could believe CARB/EPA actually truly cared about what's best in Reality. Basically in WtW comparison, diesel stacks up quite nicely compared to gasoline. To say nothing of diesels putting up better than EPA numbers in Real World usage where as gasoline generally doesn't (unless you are someone that actually has a driving style and/or usage scenario that mimics the EPA testing methodoloy).

I'd LOVE to convert it to bio ... AFAIK this will be the first AWD sedan in the US.

This might be my first brand new car purchase ... must have!

The emission ratings for the A6 version are the same for all engines. I would suspect it to be the same on the A4.

In 2015 the US is getting some hybrid diesel A3 as well. That is going to very, very interesting imo.

For all but NOX, and even then, the levels are stupidly low (and beneficial at times rather than harmful), diesels with DPF are as good or better than gasoline - especially compared to DI gasoline - when it comes to emissions.

Drive a diesel, be happy you're helping the environment. And yourself.
