Think about it this way, the median US household income is $54,000 pre-tax. Total you're probably talking about a monthly take home pay of somewhere around $3,400 with that. When you subtract rent/mortgage, food, utilities, etc, etc, I wouldn't be surprised if a household's average disposable income is more like $1,500-$2,000 or so. In that context even if you're only saving $100 per month that $100 is a substantial addition to your disposable income.
Jesus Christ, where do you get a mortgage for $1,500??????????? More like $3,000 minimum. You can get a dumpy apartment for $1,500.00 though (before utilities). So yeah, $100 isn't even lunch money.
