Think about it this way, the median US household income is $54,000 pre-tax. Total you're probably talking about a monthly take home pay of somewhere around $3,400 with that. When you subtract rent/mortgage, food, utilities, etc, etc, I wouldn't be surprised if a household's average disposable income is more like $1,500-$2,000 or so. In that context even if you're only saving $100 per month that $100 is a substantial addition to your disposable income.

Jesus Christ, where do you get a mortgage for $1,500??????????? More like $3,000 minimum. You can get a dumpy apartment for $1,500.00 though (before utilities). So yeah, $100 isn't even lunch money.

Where are you living, San Francisco? The average mortgage payment in the US is somewhere around $1,100 a month, maybe slightly more. A $3,000 monthly mortgage payment at today's rates would equal about a $500,000 mortgage loan on about a $600,000 house. Considering the median US home price is about $190k.. uhmm... yeah. You can get a lot more than a dumpy apartment for $1,500.

It's also odd that you think a normal mortgage would consume nearly 90% of the median household's monthly income.

So back to what I was saying, $100 is a non-trivial portion of people's take-home pay.

Do you enjoy being woefully ignorant of 95%+ of the country?

Are you talking about homes that are like, somewhere near civilization? Yes, 500k is an average price for a house. $190k is not a house price. That's an expensive car. Who the fuck buys a house for $190k? Is that shit even possible? Where the hell do you live? Iraq?

I just bought a 3/2 house in Boca Raton FL, not a cheap place, and my mortgage payment is 1,800, so not even close to 3k.

I live in NYC. It's true you couldn't get a house here for $190k, but there are plenty of places fairly close to here where you easily could. Hell, if you went to the Bronx you could probably get a house for $190k.

The median home sales price for in the US last year was somewhere around $200k. That means that lots and lots of people are getting houses for $190k or somewhere near it. How are you so clueless?

My mortgage for a $165K 2400 sq/ft house in Richmond, Tx is $1,255/month and that includes taxes/insurance. I originally financed $135K and recently refinanced for a 15 year period to get the current price.

The Bronx? OK, well sure. You can get a low price if you live on a fucking shooting range populated by gang members. There is a reason the houses are almost free there.

Still not addressing the fact that the median US house price was about $200k I see.

Anyway, back to the original point, not only can you get a mortgage for less than $3,000 a month, that's nearly triple what the average person pays, which is somewhere around $1,100 a month. So yes, $100 means a lot to people.

If only my house was worth that much. It's all about location and transportation. I live across the Puget Sound from Seattle. You can't touch anything in Seattle that you would want to live in for less than probably $450,000. It takes a minimum of an hour and as much as 2 hours to commute from where I live. Thankfully I don't work in Seattle.

My mom's 5 bedroom house is in the Philly suburbs and it's worth maybe $250k. My one bedroom co-op in NYC is worth about $300k, and my place is fairly cheap compared to most in Brooklyn.

Buy a house around here for $250k and you'll be afraid to even go outside, and for good reason too. People die in places that cost $250k. Its not a fucking joke. They will kill you and take your shit just because they are bored.

Most places in this nation you can get a pretty decent house for $190K. Wake up, dude. These are the same places where $54K is a pretty decent salary, so yes, these people buy $190K (and under) houses, and yes, $100 is a significant portion of their normal discretionary spending budget.

Here in Chattanooga, TN, Bell Development will sell you a very nice brand new house of 1,500 to 2,000 square feet on a small lot (which would be a big lot in most places where $500k is an average price) in a very good subdivision starting in the $190s. I think they've sold all their under $200k right now, but as little as $215k will bring you a brand new 2,000+ square foot 4 bedroom 3 bath with finished basement. http://www.belldevelopment.net/homes/availablehomes.php

And this is a suburb around a city of around a quarter million. Drop down to a small city of maybe 50k and that brand new 2,000+ square foot 4 bedroom 3 bath with finished basement might cost you $150k.

Not sure if trolling. Maybe you should move somewhere that doesn't suck. If you are not trolling you clearly don't know much about the rest of the country outside of your circle.

I suspect that job selection would be extraordinarily finite and limited.

The circle I live in is, apparently, the ONE FUCKING CIRCLE that everyone else in the country simply MUST live in. People keep flocking here like a giant cloud of zombie geese. The population here is so damn insane, I can't even spill my fucking coffee without getting it on 50 other people's shoes.

Well maybe not everyone lives around where you do. Also, nobody cares that you live in an expensive area. It's not special.

It sounds like you live in LA, and the population density there is nowhere close to insane. A quick google search shows that it's about 2,750 per square mile. That's amateur hour compared to the east coast. (NYC is about 26,000 per square mile)
