Hmm, Skyrim is only $5.49, but I get the impression it is very open world with not a lot of story? I have tough time with those types of games, but it certainly looks cool.

KT

There's plenty of story. And a huge community of more free stories that are also awesome. Then there's the massive open world if you're still not satisfied. Just play the main quest if you want. Worth it for 6 bucks for sure.

Bought it for full price pre-order and never regretted it. If you're a South Park fan it's a must play.

I just finished it and it was a ton of fun. Some actual laugh out loud moments too. It was pretty short however (17 hours for me) so I'm glad I picked it up on sale.

Ok, guess I'll just grab it. Thanks.

You're losing out if you don't give it a chance. Yes, it is almost purely open world, but you can follow the story if you so choose (Despite the general consensus--the main story is actually pretty solid, if not something of a letdown at the end--basically like every Mass Effect game).

You also have the faction quests which make up a large chunk of story content--Dark Brotherhood and Thieve's guild were probably the best. Companions, which you can start rather early on, are also great.

I had trouble with TES/Fallout type games because of their lack of direction for the player, until Skyrim. I dunno, it's endlessly fun to just run around the woods and discover shit, get lost in everything. It helps that I greatly prefer the northern nordic, snowy and hot springs type environments than the bland central european or fantasy elvin crap of the earlier TES games.

Combat is simple. I would avoid magic in the vanilla version of Skyrim--it's not a big thing in that world anyway, as the nords or whatever are viking type folk that like to smash things. As simple as a mechanic as it is, I found smashing things into submission with my shield quite enjoyable.

The mods make it far more enjoyable, but that's another game in itself.

If you do go that route, you should at least install these:
--SKSE & SkyUI (new UI which fixes the horrible console-derived UI)
--Official HD pack or one of the other community created packs--I think SkyHD on Nexus Mods is probably the best, iirc. Also, weather, a few texture packs...stuff like that.

Don't bother with anything that changes the game mechanics.

That being said....I thought I would try Fallout 3 again--you may not recall this, but you sent me your DVD copy that you never could get to work some...3-4 years ago? I played it briefly, but having just finished with Fallout NV (well, I never finished it, but 54 hours in...), I guess I was too burned out.

So, reinstalling from DVD, it will no longer validate this game. ffs...I think I will just buy it on steam or GMG ($9.51 for GOTY right now)

This is my concern:

I had trouble with TES/Fallout type games because of their lack of direction for the player

I don't really enjoy those games with minimal direction. However it sounds like it should be relatively easy to follow the base story here, so I will give it a try. I still have a chunk of DA2 to get through though, then will probably go right into DA:I after that, so it could be a while before I actually try it.

Completely forgot that I had sent you that copy of Fallout. Sucks that you can't get it working either though.

Maybe the deals didn't seem as good this time around, but I still ended up purchasing some games:

- South Park: The Stick Of Truth
- Teleglitch
- The Binding of Isaac Rebirth
- Wolfenstein TNO
- Shadownrun Dragonfall

I am still on the fence about Divinity Original Sin.

Now just waiting for Witcher 3 (will probably pre order).

The Wife

If you have steam keys for either The Witcher 1 and/or 2 you can put them in at gog.com and get an additional 10% off for the pre-order (Total 20%), for the gog.com site only

Just a thought

Once you are able to separate the main story quests from the faction quests from random quests you might pick up--these are separated in your logbook--then it's relatively easy to keep on track. Also, I think the main questline has its own marker on the main map, to separate that storyline from everything else.

Also...I forgot that it takes place during a civil war, so there is also that story going on all the time--you can choose to ally with the Imperials or Sotrmcloaks (the self-anointed native sons of Skyrim), but you can ignore all of that, as well. Plot-wise, it ends up being somewhat irrelevant, but there is so much nuance in the factions that it is actually quite interesting. Honestly, though, I think I ignored it all until finishing the main quest--kind of a bad idea if you are looking for a challenge.

Sticking to the main story, the guild/faction questlines and some of the longer dungeons and sidequests (like the various daedrick prince quests--most of which are awesome), would take ~80 hours.

Trying to do absolutely everything will be something like 200+ hours, I think.

Kinda glad that the FO3 disc doesn't work--even though it needs more tender love trying to activate on Win7, I think the steam version will be easier to fix wrg to the Games for Windows live crap than will the disc version.

Personally combat implementation is the worst thing about Skyrim, and every TES game. It is better in Skyrim than it ever has been, but still not great.

I could never get the Steam version working either FWIW.

Your description does not make it sound all that different from Dragon Age, so maybe my hesitance is unwarranted, I just heard people mention Skyrim and The Witcher in the same breath and I found The Witcher extremely boring.

For Fallout 3, they removed the GFWL key activation so it should just work, you might even be able to add that key to steam and it will show up in your library.

For the life of me I cannot find the info about it, at least thats what I seem to recall

I still had to patch GFWL out with a mod a couple of months ago. Maybe it has changed in the mean time.

DOS was worth every penny I paid at retail, and then some. The best true RPG I've played in years. Maybe the best ever. That said, if you don't plan to play it right away, might as well wait for next sale. It can only go lower.

Ended up with:

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor
Transistor
Metal Slug 3
Child of Light
Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons
Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit
South Park: The Stick of Truth
Shadow Warrior
Hammerwatch

About $65 total for those (Mordor was $30 by itself). I really don't understand all the complaining about the sales. I'm happy with all of my purchases, even though there are still 42 items on my wishlist that I would also like to have had for a dollar each. Those weren't meant to be this sale.

I really liked Child of Light and Brothers this year, I also got Shadow Warrior I just haven't gotten to fire it up yet.

off topic but i'm interested in getting a 27"+ monitor for casual gaming. is the text for 1440 @ 27" too small to read?

I'm looking at a few monitors atm.

I bought Wolfenstein New Order for $20. Played for about 20 minutes before having to press "E" to pick up ammo, armor and health made me quit. What a terrible game mechanic.

That HP monitor in your second link is only 1080p.

Having owned one of the Korean monitors, I appreciate the OSD options and build quality of my Dell setup much more. I didn't put much faith into any warranties they offer, but I guess ymmv.

IIRC the Overlord Tempest was one of the ones that was known to be overclockable. Make sure the one you get doesn't just drop frames once you start overclocking it.

Here's an image of the forums at the smallest size I can read from my chair:

I know that doesn't give you much sense of scale. Trying to dig up photos of the actual monitor for you, they're lying around somewhere

Edit: Newegg has an Acer 27" 2560x1440 for $287 shipped if that fits your bill

I still had to patch GFWL out with a mod a couple of months ago. Maybe it has changed in the mean time.

Seems to be working fine. I activated the key from GMM through Steam, and followed a few of these instructions:

https://steamcommunity.com/app/22370/discussions/0/828937546147175081/

I think steam auto-updated after the initial installation, which probably updated to 1.7 which, I think, fixes things for win 7 and removes GFWL? something like that.

The only thing that I really did, was to hit "play" in the launcher to access the main menu, then quit. Though, I think the ,ini was created without needing to do this. Anyway, I went straight to Nexus and installed the updated patch, the extra resource address (or whatever it is called) to utilize up to 4 gb, a large texture pack, and a set of lighting packs.

Activated all of that before starting a game

Got outside of the vault and not one crash yet!

I really wanted this, and got it. I've put maybe 3 hours into it, maybe more...just can't get myself to play for very long. I got to the first town, and find the extensive amount of dialogue and options to be soul-crushing. I know--I just need to get through this part, and while I like the nostalgia of dialogue-driven RPG, most of this text is text simply for the sake of being there.

I find myself skipping nearly all of every conversation, because it is primarily filler expressions like "By the hoary sock of scoundrel's left toe, this was a day long sought and one not soon forgotten by such as pirates of last Winterhold and the day of first reckoning, for which great feasts were enjoyed and I once held court with the Autumn Queen of Senderfell!"

or some meaningless claptrap like that. Just say "That party was a blast!"

That's they key. Plow through the first town, and then it's smooth sailing. The combat is awesome. Using the environment against the enemy just feels right.
