Hey, can anyone who has the Samsung U28D590D monitor do a mini review? Thinking of getting one of these and was wondering about a few things.
Stuff like input lag, viewing angles, colours and so on. Any input really.
That would be great.
I'm guessing that Wag's backlight issue is something that could be RMA'd if bought here.
BTW, does anyone know how does the non-MST thing work?

EDIT: Forgot the monitor name.

I bought it yesterday at my local bestbuy and quickly returned it. I've had a multitude of monitors throughout the years, 2407WFP-HC, U2410, U2711 and U213HM

Maybe I've been spoiled but I was expecting better color quality and sharper text. No matter what I tried, I couldn't get the colors I wanted and text appeared fuzzy. Contrast wasn't that great either

The cheap stand really bothered me, and the fact that you can't really replace it easily unless you make something custom yourself.

I used the supplied displayport cable and didn't have to change anything ( MST ) to get it recognized by my R9 290...

In the end, the monitor had too flaws for me to keep it even at $599+tax

Back to my 2713HM for now

Thanks!
I'm really itching for an upgrade (or just to tinker, really) and it might have some spare money soon. Maybe I'll just go underwater instead.

Oh, so MSRP must be $599. I thought I read $699. Gougegg has it for $870 but it's not available..

Tempting.

For the guys talking MST, what are the drawbacks?

As an owner I can't say 100% if Samsung uses a special version of MST or if the TCON on the monitor is strong enough to do 4k 60hz natively. I know dp 1.2 specs say that MST is required but when I look under monitor properties in Catalyst Control Center there's a blurb that says Multi Stream Transport capable and is listed as No.

However when I first got it it had a weird problem of mini flickering or blacking out where the screen would go black flash a tiled display pretty much the same way MST emulates 2 1920x2160 displays and joins them but then the picture would come back. It hasn't happened ever since switching the korean power cord for a US one but that's my perspective on the MST thing.

Well, I didn't get very far with my eBay seller. After sending this video to my seller he said it looked like dirt on the screen and I should wipe it off with a cloth.

Ironically I wiped off the screen anyways and now the backlight blotching problem isn't quite as noticeable (mostly only from an angle), I think that's more because of me putting pressure on the screen than anything.

There is also considerable light leakage from the top and bottom horizontal edges of the display too. I definitely notice the blue glow on 2.33 content.

I'm pretty sure MSRP is $699 US (as Amazon and Best Buy USA have it at this price right now).
I think what happened was some sites got confused and priced it @ $599 CAD. ??????????????

For the record, the U28D590D model is not available in the US, and any attempt to contact Samsung about support will be refused.

I tried after I ordered, and canceled my order because Samsung said, it was a Non USA monitor, and not supported.

Tell him, that all the capability you have available and and to deal with it. A video is not going to translate directly to in person.

Tell then to ether give you a refund or take the bad rating. I would state that it is the monitor not the seller. But that's just me.

He just offered me $100 back, with apologies saying it's their fault and would be too expensive to ship the monitor back. I'm wondering if I should take it up with eBay's buyer protection dept now? I'm considering taking the money and forget it.

Probably a good shot at getting your money back, they often side with the buyer. You are in the right here of course but it's one of the reasons I avoid selling things on eBay. Heard stories of people buying graphics cards for mining then filing a bogus claim to get their money back just before the complaint window was over, so I stick to forums or Craigslist usually now.

Awesome!

Post your initial impressions.

My monitor from NCIX is on backorder.

When I ordered, their inventory system showed 27 in stock in NY. I kept checking back to see how quickly the monitors were being sold and they still showed stock 6+ hours later. Emailed customer service and they basically said their supplier ran out which I take to mean their inventory tracking system sucks.

Right now I'm #4 on the wait list and they're telling me end of April or first part of May. Tempted to just order from Best Buy but I can't bring myself to cough up the extra $100.

Mini-review will have to wait unfortunately.

I was thinking of taking the $100 and just selling it on Craigslist and getting another one. I don't know how difficult eBay's protection process is, and how long it takes. Return shipping isn't covered in eBay's protection policy and that would cost me well over $100 anyways. Even if I won I'd probably have to pay to ship it back to S.Korea. What a mess.

I'm really not sure what to do at this point.

In the end I decided to take the $100 and try to flip it on Craigslist because as I said, according to eBay's buyer's protection policy I'd have to pay to ship back to S. Korea anyways (seller's stated policy), so I'd end up out more money in the long run.

Last time I ever buy a monitor or expensive consumer electronics item overseas. More trouble than it's worth.

yeah, a lot of people have good experiences but there's the off-chance that we would get hit with the "1%"

i got a shimian 27" 1440p from ebay last year (actually, i would say i ordered at least 5-6 korean 1440p panels in the past year), but the shimian was too 'cool'.

note that since theyre cheap, there's no OSD and you'd have to use software to color calibrate.

was never able to get it right.. this monitor was relegated for programming, so it wasn't too big of a deal.

the other panels were fine though

Does it not have standard VESA mounts for an alternate stand?

No. It's got a nonstandard stand. It's not too bad. A little wobbly, but it looks nice.

I find the text, contrast and sharpness are all excellent. That's the least of my worries.

bought the samsung ud590, returned the next day. I had crazy screen flickering on the bottom portion of the monitor due to it being a MST controlled monitor. the problem only happened while sli was enabled. not sure if it is a driver issue but it really sucked.

here is a crappy phone video I shot of it happening.

The crazier thing about that video is the sound, though.

The reviews of the Samsung U28D590D are pretty awesome, but I'm hoping for more people to share if they've bought it, aside from the kind of technical issues, of course.
