It's back! Just buy 2014 TurboTax on Amazon and you're eligible.

The details:
TurboTax with Refund Bonus Offer* Additional Details

The TurboTax Refund Bonus Program offers TurboTax customers the option to use part of their federal refund to purchase an Amazon.com Gift Card. As an exclusive bonus, TurboTax will add an extra 5% or 10% to the amount of your e-gift card, depending on the TurboTax product you've chosen.
•If you're using Basic (or Federal Free Edition with the TurboTax PLUS add-on), you'll get an additional 5% bonus on the purchase amount of your e-gift card.
•If you're using Deluxe, Premier, or Home & Business, you'll get an extra 10% bonus.

1.Before e-filing, choose any increment of $100 from your federal tax refund to purchase an Amazon.com Gift Card. The remainder will be deposited to your bank account.
2.E-file your return.
3.Wait for the IRS to accept your e-filed return.
4.One day before the IRS deposits your tax refund, you’ll get an email from TurboTax to let you know you'll be receiving your Amazon Gift Card code soon.
5.The IRS then deposits your tax refund to your bank account.
6.Once your refund is available/funded, Amazon will email your Amazon.com Gift Card claim code within 1-2 business days. Note: Saturdays and Sundays do not count as business days.
7.Click the Redeem Now button in the email (or copy/paste the Claim Code) to load the amount to your Amazon account. Your account is also enabled with exclusive discounts and promotions.

*Amazon.com Gift Card offer is for federal refunds only. Limits apply ($2000 per e-card, maximum $10,000 per customer). Offer available only for TurboTax Online or CD/download versions sold and shipped, or downloaded directly from Intuit or Amazon. See here for full details.
**Amazon.com is not a sponsor of this promotion. Amazon.com Gift Cards ("GCs") sold by Intuit, an authorized and independent reseller of Amazon.com Gift Cards. Except as required by law, GCs cannot be transferred for value or redeemed for cash. GCs may be used only for purchases of eligible goods at Amazon.com or certain of its affiliated websites. I did this last year and never received the Amazon gift card code. It took a lot of time on the phone to recover my refund.

Thanks, OP. I wish they did this for HRBlock. I considered switching to TurboTax, but the high upfront cost and sea of negative reviews gave me pause.

Eh, I didn't have any problems. 10% in addition to your return can be a lot of $$$$$.

negative reviews are because they deleted a few investor schedules from the deluxe edition, you should check to see if you need those first before buying. Intuit is a bit sleazy for doing this, but the TT program itself is solid.

Last year this scored me a net $100
(Don't remember how, but I got the deluxe software for $19)
And I spend shit tonnes of money on Amazon anyway, so a gift card is fine.

My question is, can anyone give a simple explanation of what was removed from the previous version?

My taxes are about as simple as they get: single, no dependents, not dependent, 1 non-self-employed job.

True.
I don't see any value in the software itself (probably because my taxes are easy), the value for me is the extra 10%.

Last year I had ~$1400 return.
I got $1320 as an amazon giftcard ($1200 + %10 = $1320).
And the remainder ~$200 as a check in the mail.

I paid <$20 for the software, so I made ~$100.

Edit---

Maybe not completely true; I think your refund gift card amount has to be in hundred-dollar increments.

As an FYI, TT has altered its packages to essentially force everyone to use the next "version" up from what they did last year.

Features/forms were pulled and moved up to the next expensive package.

They are stating that non-web usage is declining.

H&R is not pulling this forced upgrade stunt.

Yeah that's about right. I think I had a 2K refund so just got my refund as $2200 in gift cards. So pocketed 150 off Amazon and had a nice shopping spree.

True and I'm dumping TurboTax this year. ByeBye Intuit, you lost another customer.

I'm going to try H&R or TaxAct.

H&R Block has a similar program. You can defer portions of a refund, in increments of $100 and get a 5% or 10% bonus on an e-gift card.

Link

-H&R Block federal Free or Basic edition, or the 1040EZ app, you'll get an additional 5% bonus
- Deluxe, Premium, or Premium & Business (personal only) edition, you'll get an extra 10% bonus on the purchase amount of your e-gift cards.

List of the roughly 40 retailers participating can be found here, includes Target, Home Depot, Best Buy, among others.
