Ford has been taking a lot of their design ques from European cars. Cars like the Quatroporte and Vantage. It does feel like a step backward, especially with the 250hp i4 engine. I can see this as being right at home as the next Taurus or Lincoln MKZ. It's not a Mustang though. The Mustang isn't a sports car or a grand tourer, it's a pony car. Square front and back, big engines, designed for straight line performance.

The front end designs you're seeing on Fords in the states are not so much a European design cue as they are mandated by the new pedestrian impact laws over there. As Ford continues to move toward world-wide platforms (que "It's a small world after all") you'll be seeing more European-like cars, because their crash and safety standards tend to be a little more strict than they are over here.
