Latest version of the thread from last year. To talk about all things NFL *not* related to the Super Bowl which has it own thread. Everything else is fair game, from coaching changes, to free agent signings, mock drafts, and what your favorite team is doing to take home the Lombardi next year!

Just to kick things off, poll inquires who you think will be the 1.01 pick of the NFL draft by the pathetic Tampa Bay Bucaneers.

My can't miss infallible predictions:

1. The prophecy is fulfilled and the 'Skins pull the plug on their QB experiment this offseason, drafting Marcus Mariotta at the 1.06 and trading RG3 to the Rams for a 2nd rounder. Thus completing the entire circle of their humiliation.

2. Tampa (stupidly) decides to draft Jameis Winston and trades Glennon (who is a better QB) to the Cards for a late round pick, where he enjoys good success albeit is never an elite player.

3. Jets cut Percy Harvin. Pats grab him off waivers and turn him into a true superstar and their best WR since Randy Moss and proceed to ride him all the way to (another) Super Bowl.

I too think Jamies is gonna get picked first. I could see Mariotta dropping to the teens.

Mariotta is a see it and stick it player, He has NEVER been coached in anticipation and 3 and 5 and 7 step drops. Mariotta is gonna take 2 plus years to develop those skills. I say two years because he is so smart. Some guys with his skills never get it.

Huge draft and free agency this year. While Last years draft had more top tier talent this years crop of pass rushers is worlds better than last year. Linebacker and safety are deep as is the best OT class I have seen in a decade.

Free agency has a ton of teams with cap issues. Guys like Suh in the past would NEVER hit the open market.

bears signed fangio as DC.

If bears go 3 4 they gotta pick up some pieces and dump Allen.

I really hope the bears move on from Allen and Cutler and Marshall at this point. While I would like to keep marshall his cap hit is gonna be hard to swallow with so many holes on the roster.

If bears lose Allen and Jennings and Cutler they would have over 40 million in cap space to sign 3 4 personell.

I think somebody would give a second rounder for Cutler this year more than any other year. If buttfumble is the best QB available Jake Cutlet doesnt look so bad.

I am more exited about the DC hiring in chicago then the HC or GM

Other questions
Fox ran a two gap scheme almost all his coaching life while 49ers ran a 3-4. Gonna be a really interesting few months for the bears.

Browns gonna pick Johnny Manziel in the first round, again.

I see Winston going first and Mariotta going soon after. I mean, either will go before the 7th pick, as the Jets are going to need someone not name Geno Smith to lead their team.

Fangio did good with the remains of SF's defense after all the injuries and off the field issues. Think they were ranked top 5 in DVOA.

I think I read that every single years hes been a DC hes been top 5. I was most impressed like you said with his ability to coach the team losing its top talent. To lose those marquee names and still produce is rare in this league

I would have been good with him being the head coach.

Cant believe I just read that Mike Martz is interviewing in Cleveland.

OMG LOL

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2007958-nfl-101-the-basics-of-the-3-4-defensive-front

good article from Matt Bowen about the nuts and bolts of a 3-4

Bears also have a couple of 2 techniques on the roster they are gonna need to figure out how to use and an entire linebacker corp that needs to be replaced. I think Christian Jones can play an inside LB spot in a 3 4 and MAYBE bostic. Team may throw minimum money at DJ Williams to stay since hes been better in a 3 4 in the past hasnt he?

Martz schemes tend to see QB's get sacked a lot, Manziel would get killed.

Jameis Winston has all the quality's of a bust IMO. Bad off the field issues, high INT ratio, and collapse when playing a team that has real talent. I can see the browns or Jets drafting him.

Marcus Mariota seems to have more upside to him. Not sure if he has any off the field issues but his stats are decent. If he has a good work ethic and gets on a team that will actually get him ready and not toss him to the wolves he may have a decent career. Rumor has it the Eagles are trying to get him. If Foles can come back healthy for at least a year that would give them time to work with Mariota slowly and see if he can step up. But if Foles plays well then could setup a QB contest. Worse case Eagles trades one for more drafts.

Mariota would fit right in Philly, with some work.

Wouldn't touch Winston with a 10 foot pole. He's a total dumbshit and will be nothing but a ticking PR nightmare for any front office that considers him.

Yea but the Eagles are at number 20. To get to the top3, my thinking where they need to be to get him, they may have to give Foles up to get that high.

Hopefully the Eagles do not pull a Redskins to get him.

And that is why I hope Tampa takes him. That way worse case the Falcons end up third in their division for a while.

thats what they said about randy moss. I dont see him a Jamarcus russel bust because hes actually playing or played I should say in a real pro style offense. He made reads and checks like the big boys since his freshman year. Take a look at Telvin Smith and Christian Jones both players on his team that had character concerns coming out and both did great as rookies.

I think hes really immature and has been coddled. Could he run amok if hes given a long leash yes

The way the first round cap numbers now its easier to take a flyer on a QB. So much defensive talent this draft with Williams and Gregory and Ray I could see them being picked before Mariotta and after Winston.

To be fair, Randy Moss got extremely lucky the Vikings wanted him. The Cowboys passed up on moss due to his off field issues after courting him for a long time.

Pending news regarding Manning's somewhat expected retirement, the dismantling of Elway's athlete collection will be interesting.

The Seattle of next year will be a different beast(-less) team as well. Hard to imagine Lynch not on that team, but oh well.

true. Randy was able to excel because he had someone that mentored him and a coach that held him to a high standard at first. What worked for randy and would work for Jamies is the relationship he will have with Josh Mcown and with Lovie Smith.

Lance Briggs would have been an issue but Lovie Smith challenged him to be a man. Lovie is a good character motivator than he is a X and O guy.

I see Lance and Jamies as very similiar.

TRESTMAN TO FLACCOS

told you guys he would land in a great spot. Some guys are meant to be generals and some are meant to be Sergeants..

No, he's not.

I'm sure he is considering it. He would be a fool not to. No 1st round pick, a late 2nd round pick, a crappy draft class, a very limited FA market, and not much QB depth on the existing roster.

Tell me again who possibly else would be available on the market as a better veteran commodity at this point?

There are so few choices this year though some cheap trades could happen. Washington has a backup to trade. Lovie has a decent QB he doesnt respect for some reason in Glennon and the Chiefs could deal their backup as well.

Rex is a devil you know guy and at least he knows Buttefumble

If Mariota somehow falls to 2 I hope there is a team willing to trade up with the Titans to get him. I don't think there is a QB worth taking with a #1 or 2 this year and would rather trade down and get one of the DL or LB prospects. We need so many pieces that extra picks would be more beneficial than a QB that will likely get run out of town before we have the other spots up to snuff.
