Not looking forward to the start of the season for Dallas.

It looks brutal, but also a perfect time for a should-be strong Cowboys team to catch some classic late-starters and streakers snoozing early on. If Dallas can steal a road win from Seattle early and beat on some probable cupcakes in Chi and TB, they would look good with an early bye while a hopefully-uninjured Romo gets an early break to rehab his shoulder for the rest of the season.

Of course once again NYJ will miss any advantage from a cheatriot suspension.

Monster contract. Didn't expect it to be that high.

For real? Irsay suggested shocking... most analysts figured it would be the biggest contract the NFL has yet seen.

Honestly, it's not anywhere near as bad as some were expecting. Many were thinking 25/season.

I think Luck knew the money he didn't get may go to a decent fucking running back.

Colts and decent running backs don't generally get used in the same sentence. It's been over 10 years since Addai had like two decent seasons and like 12 since Edgerrin James played for the Colts. Ahmad Bradshaw was decent enough but always hurt and the Colts coaches insisted on giving the bulk of carries to losers like T-Rich anyway. Why the Colts picked a WR in the 1st last year and didn't draft Telvin Coleman in the 3rd is exactly why they've one exactly one SB ring in the past 45 years.

now the redskins are looking even dumber for not signing cousins to a long term deal earlier. they need to get it done before the deadline or else his price is just going to be higher next year.

of course, that is if they truly think he is the long term solution.

Don't ever change Cleveland. I for one am looking forward to the new episodes of the "Browns Debacle Show."

The Cleveland Plain Dealer's Mary Kay Cabot believes the "odds are very, very high" Robert Griffin III opens the season as the Browns' starting quarterback.

Cabot added coach Hue Jackson is "all in" on Griffin and is "riding him hard" during practice. Despite what has reportedly been a lackluster spring for Griffin, it sounds like the coaching staff is still squarely in his corner. It would be surprising if he is not the starter Week 1.

Also in comedy news, Ex-NFL QB Johnny Manziel said he's going "completely sober" starting this Friday, July 1.

Right, he's gonna start sobriety on 4th of July weekend. I have an easier time believing the Browns will win the Super Bowl this year.

No Hall for Megatron. Only a few great years.

What is the standard for "great" years?

>= 1,200 yards = 5 seasons
>= 9 touchdowns = 5 seasons

Not many players in the HoF match/exceed the number of "great" years with these numbers.

Over a 9 year career Johnson averaged 1,291 yards per season, 81 receptions, and 9 touchdowns.

So his 9 year "average" is "great" every season. A lot of HoF started slow and puttered at the end dropping their averages below 1,200yards / 9TDs averages.

And you cannot ding him for only 731 receptions because he isn't a volume slot receiver averaging 9 yards a catch. Johnson has a career average of 15.9 yards per reception.

That is a great "average" career with at least 5 spectacular seasons. Johnson also holds at least one major NFL record:

* Most receiving yards in a single season: 1,964 yards

He also holds a number of records that show how "bright" he burned:

* Seasons with 1,600 yards receiving (2, tied with Marvin Harrison, Torry Holt, and Antonio Brown)

* Most 100 receiving yard games in a single season (11, tied with Michael Irvin)

* Fastest to 10,000 NFL receiving yards (115 games)

In Johnsons 9 year career, he had 7 of 9 seasons with over 1,000 yards, 6 consecutive seasons with > 1,000 yards. He was only 16 yards short in 2009 for 1,000 yards, but was also out 2 games; had he reached 1,000 yards in 2009 (only 16 more yards) it would be 8 consecutive seasons with > 1,000 yards in a 9 year career.

I do think longevity is a factor for the Hall of Fame, but 9 years averaging over 9 TDs and 1,200 yards is a very large window. It isn't a 13 or 14 year career--or nearly 20 like Rice--but that isn't the "standard." It may be the standard for GOAT, but for the HoF?

He also gets some bonus points for:

+ Lions
+ Matt Stafford

For his 9 seasons Johnson was always one of the best after his rookie season, stopped in the last 2 years more by injuries than opponents (yet still producing at a high level) and from 2008-2013 before injuries hit in 2014 and 2015 he was a dominant force. His last 2 seasons totals were almost over 150 catches, over 2,200 yards, and 17 TDs. It wasn't like he was a scrub his last couple injury riddled seasons.

Easy 1st ballot for me. Burned as hot as a GOAT in his prime and had a 9 year stretch that averaged "great" seasons.

;eyeroll;

Holy moly!

I retract my opinion after such a deft analysis. After seeing each point deconstructed with such piercing accuracy I am at a loss at how I ever arrived at such an opinion to begin with.

Thank you for pointing out the flaws in my wayward thinking. I am forever in your debt.

Signed, Nobody-Never

Hey, at least I didn't argue he won the underwear Olympics at 6'5" 239lbs with a 43 inch vert and 4.35 40 (with 1.52 10 yard split). Johnson was an absolute monster of an athlete who had on field product to match.

THAT would have been worthy of a double eye roll

It was for listing Stafford as a detriment to his career, while he hasn't been anywhere close to a top 5 qb I don't think he's that horrible of a passer that he was bad for Calvin's career. The rest of your analysis I agree with, carry on hating though, it's entertaining.

Yeah, why knock on Matt Stafford? there's at least a dozen teams now and over the last 5 years that could use him. He's no slouch.
