40k for a Colorado? Why not just get a 4wd Silverado that's a few years old for 20k? In 5 years from now your Colorado and the Silverado that is a few years old already would likely have the same resell value.

Because I don't need a Silverado, nor do I want a used vehicle. One of the reasons I'm looking for something else is that I'm no longer interested in fixing my vehicles and my Fusion with 80k miles is now starting to need fixing.

Just do it right get a proper spray in liner. Saving a few hundred bucks on $40k truck seems silly.

What's going wrong on your fusion at only 80k?

Rust on the driver's side edge of the hood. Black trim on the passenger door is coming off. Chrome trim around the bottom edge of one of the windows came off at some point while I was driving. I'll be replacing the evap tube assembly now for the second time when I get around to it. Shocks need to be replaced soon. Occasionally the turn signals don't work properly for a day - it's like I've just bumped it to change lanes. I've done all kinds of troubleshooting on my own, but it just randomly goes back to normal after a day or two. Haven't wanted to pay diagnostic fees for such an intermittent problem.

"I want a vehicle that can tow a ~25 foot boat or a skid steer."
I wouldn't even CONSIDER a Midsize chassis truck for those loads. I've had quite a few different size trucks over the years (Gas and Diesel) and towed for 150,000k+ miles and I'd want a 1/2 ton minimum for those kind of loads. In the real world the Midsize trucks don't do a heck of a lot better 1/2 tons on fuel mileage, maybe 2mpg better. I have a smaller older Bobcat 743 skidsteer and with an implement and trailer it comes in right at 8000#, a 25' boat is going to be north of 6000# too. I'm sure the Colorado has tow rating that "accommodates" those loads but its not the proper tool for the job and I'd personally give up ~2mpg to gain towing ability and more likely a better price do to rebates on the 1500.

Not sure I wouldn't find myself a 3/4 ton for pulling a skid steer. Half ton would be the absolute minimum. It's not just about pulling its the stopping too.

Agree on both accounts. Not sure why people are paying more for a midsize truck when the rebates on the 1500s are so good? More truck and less money. Yes please. And good luck reselling the Colorado. A good used full size truck around here is going at minimum a grand over kbb value.

I helped my son get into a ZR2 today, a 15 year old one. It's one of the nicer S-10s I've seen around.

For me personally, it's the mileage. If I could get a 1500 that got 30 mpg on the highway, I would. But 80% of this truck's miles will be unloaded highway miles. Another 19% will be unloaded city miles, and the remaining 1% it will be towing or hauling something.

The fact that I have to deal with 15-18mpg combined for a typical 1/2 ton truck has kept me from buying one. Now that there's one with a reasonable amount of towing/hauling ability (as much as 1/2 tons not too long ago) that also gets 30 mpg on the highway, I'm looking into getting something that can be my daily driver and also use it to pick up a couple yards of dirt or move a boat around.

I had a 2004 ZR2. It was a gas hog and parts were breaking all the time. But it got me up and down mountains so I didnt care.
Finally sold it a few years ago in exchange for a gay little mini-SUV.

Lockers should only be used in a straight line. Turning with a locked front axle is nearly impossible.

I have a 2015 Colorado Z71. Turning on dry pavement with the 4WD is hard enough without lockers. Couldnt imagine how bouncy it would get with lockers! Unless there is sand or dirt to help it slip it bounces and bucks pretty hard already.

I live in Canuckistan and have been thoroughly impressed with the 4WD capabilities of the Colorado in deep (2 - 2.5ft) snow and ice. I wouldnt bother with ZR2 unless you just want it for aesthetics - it does look mean!

For anyone following this, I have 27k miles on the truck now. I stopped driving it daily last fall after receiving a promotion with a company car. Now my wife drives it more than I do. I still like it quite a bit. My wife and I took it up to Manistee for a long weekend. Got about 30 mpg on the trip, even with a 10 mile crawl through some 2-track roads/snowmobile trails (she was a little disappointed we took the truck rather than her Wrangler). Have had none of the emissions issues that a lot of people have with the 2.8L. It's come in handy... I've had four 6 foot collapsable picnic tables in the bed on several occasions. Face cords of firewood. Lumber for home projects. The only thing I don't like about it is that 4 foot wide sheets of wood or drywall can't lay flat in the bed due to the wheel wells. A couple sheets can rest on the tail gate, no problem, otherwise if I wanted to put 20 sheets in the bed I'd have to build a flat floor for it. I've been looking into Decked... but may just build something myself instead.
