That was the Air Traffic Controller Strike. It was in their contract that they couldn't strike. Reagan was right to fire them due to the massive detriment to the economy and readiness of the nation.

I had a good friend that was an Air Traffic Controller in Miami. His famous last words were "He don't have the balls to fire us". Six months later he was selling insurance in Miami after he had to sell off all his belongings.

This is an entirely different situation. President has no power over the UAW.
Meanwhile what did Reagan do for the middle class besides widen the wealth gap?

UAW President Fain essentially tells Trump, “Fuck off, troll.”

“Every fiber of our union is being poured into fighting the billionaire class and an economy that enriches people like Donald Trump at the expense of workers,” UAW President Shawn Fain said in an emailed statement. “We can’t keep electing billionaires and millionaires that don’t have any understanding what it is like to live paycheck to paycheck and struggle to get by and expecting them to solve the problems of the working class.”

We will see what happens here. Whatever Fain may think, there are most likely plenty of UAW members and their families that are pro-Trump.

Or, Trump will chicken out and not show up on going to Detroit, and blame Antifa/Biden/Soros/The Marxists/ The Communists/The Deep State/And some other made up shit.

It'd be a real shame if they get their 4 day work week, and then it spreads to the rest of the workforce ...

/s

A couple of times over my career we have been reduced to 4 day work weeks and our pay cut to 80%. I loved it, although I spent more money. Those living paycheck to paycheck hated it. If my wage was reduced like those times I'd still prefer it, if my wage was my normal wage for a full week at only 4 days I'd about wet myself, and if we went to 4 day weeks with a good raise I'd be ecstatic.

When COVID first hit, my work went to 4 days a week but at a 12% pay cut.

I would 100% take that deal permanently. I told my boss if I can choose between a 10% pay raise or 10% less time.at work, I'd take the latter in a heartbeat.

Seems like some places in Europe do ok with it as well. Just a better work life balance. It'd be interesting what a shorter work week would do (over time) to health metrics ...

What really sucks is when you go to the home office where they have 3 day weekends and you have to work so much OT that it's just a joke.

President Biden was on the UAW picket line this week, supporting workers.

My first thought, is OK, we know he supports the working class, but the more I learn about the strike, the more I understand the driving force. 20 - 30 years ago, union autoworkers were really the pinnacle of a good union job. Well, that ship has sailed.

Today, the CEOs of the big 3 are each compensated over $20 million dollars a year. In 2022 the big 3 spent $9 Billion in stock buybacks, and dividends to make the executives and wealthy stockholders richer.

Today, the top hourly wage of an autoworker is $33 an hour. (that only 66K a year)

By contrast, I was making more than that almost 25 years ago, when I retired, from a non-union job. I've never been a union member, and was a bit on the anti-union side of the fence, simply because I didn't need or want to be in a union. My grandsons (20 & 22) are both firefighter/EMTs, and making more than that.

Something I have never said, uttered, or typed... but it's time.

GO UNION!

At the same time they are dumping billions into stock buy backs and dividends the Big 3 are claiming they can’t make better offers because they need money for the transition to EVs.

I just got off the phone with my good friend/neighbor who works at KTP. The other KAP allegedly walks out tomorrow.

They could take a 90% pay cut and at $2M, they'd still be getting 30 times more than the average worker wage. (66K x 30 = 1.9 M)

Yea but according to Ben Shapiro the workers add zero value to the company, it's the owners and management taking all the risk, therefor they should get ALL of the reward. I recall a recent incident where every employee of a fast food restaurant walked off the job, I bet the owner didn't get far taking all of the risk and doing all of the work.

senior management really does take on all the risk, it's why they deserve multimillion payouts and retention bonuses if the company goes tits up while workers have to fight for their last paychecks in bankruptcy court.....
