2024 gardening thread. What are you growing in your garden this year?

A snake plant might work well in that location and some of them get roughly the size you are wanting. Search carefully though because a lot of them only get around 2'. I've had one for years in a similar lighting situation and it has done very well.

One "cheat" you might want to consider to get a little extra height is buying a pot with some legs. I've done that with a few of my houseplants and it works well.

Yeah my in laws do the same thing and have since I met them over 20 years ago. It works great and nobody is the wiser.

Hey @Mr.IncrediblyBored what kind of pepper seeds are you going to start? I'm a huge pepper plant fan and am always on the look out for some new or different peppers to try.

Yeah my in laws do the same thing and have since I met them over 20 years ago. It works great and nobody is the wiser.

Nothing special. The majority are those mini sweet peppers with practically no seeds. The kids mau them right off the plant.

I used to grow a bunch of heirloom peppers for roasting and canning but I was the only one eating them. Wasn't worth the work so it's all kid friendly varieties now.

There don't seem to be any overnight freezes in the 10 day forecast and we're going to get a few days of rain next week so I think I'll fill the planters with potting soil, plant the deer resistant wild flower seeds and put them out on Sunday or Monday.

This is one of the best rain seasons California has had since last rain season. Garden is lush and vibrant right now.

Better enjoy it before the next 20 year drought comes in.

You won't regret using the potting soil. Your flowers will love it so much better than just straight topsoil!

It's still to early here for most plants except maybe pansies. I was walking through the garden tonight trying to get an idea on the layout for 2024 and noticed the fall garlic we planted is coming on nicely.

We scaled back on the garlic this year because last year we planted more than we could use. Just a single 150 row feet planted on 8 inch centers.

Bro I would kill for a decent blueberry crop. I've tried for years to get some going and if mother nature doesn't get them the rabbits do.

Rabbits are tasty. They've got 1400 or so "bushes." They're 8' tall. I'll take a pic next time I out.

Try the garlic tips/shoots. They're an interesting flavor for those that like garlic. You can snip a few of the green tips off each garlic plant without harming the plant. We use them in garnishes in place of a using only garlic bulbs for a slightly different flavor.

We just bought a couple of blueberry plants. We'll see how they do. Still trying to decide where to permanently plant them.

The wife has started growing some okra, spring onions, and some other stuff. We had some asparagus peeking out, but a late frost hit. I love asparagus. Waiting for more to peek out again. Asparagus are low maintenance and the plants can easily last 10+ years. We'll grow the usual string beans, cucumbers, tomatoes, and some other greens. The missus wants to add some stuff like winter melons and maybe calabaza that can last a long time in storage.

Not sure the pear tree is gonna make it. When we got the property, the pear tree was in pretty bad shape. The peach tree is doing wonderful though. Fig tree is low maintenance and I had to trim it back last year. The missus likes to dry any extra figs. We use them as snacks, or she uses them in soups in place of other sweeteners. We planted a persimmon tree, but that's too small to bear fruit. We'll see if we can get any out of it this year, but most likely next year before it starts bearing fruit.

The planters are prepared. I put a 1 inch layer of powdered oyster shell and perlite in the bottom then filled them old potting soil that was very dry and threw off a lot of dust. It's going to rain tomorrow so I'll plant the seeds and put them ouside

I've never been to a blueberry farm before but I bet that would be a site to see! Especially when they are in bloom with all the pollinators buzzing around. It honestly sounds just splendid.

Woot, missed the early spring/late freeze so far. Looks like a bumper crop. Otherwise, cra cra cra fam events. Not drama but fucked ups. Bro in law had a widdowmaker heart attack in Feb. Fixed. Sis in law works for a deer/pig/cow butcher. Idiot infected 9 deer processors with the flu last Feb. Sis in law brought it to the fam. 5 more sick. Now, a new/old idiot at the butcher checks out, says she has mersa. Admitted to the hospital for 5 days, checks herself out, and and back at work,.......wtf?

Tell me about it! Some years I think I have more weeds growing in my lawn and gardens than the good plants. It frustrates me but I take solace in a Ralph Waldo Emmerson quote I read years ago.

"What is a weed? A plant whose virtues have not yet been discovered."

We got a break from the rain and were able to get our onions planted. It's a little late but I think they will be fine. This year we just kept it simple and went with a intermediate day sampler pack and a long day sampler pack from Dixondale Farms.



I also noticed that some of the fruit trees started blooming. Most of our fruits are going into their fourth season so if a late frost doesn't get them I'm hopeful for a decent crop.

One of the juvenile kittens completely destroyed all 6 of the 2ft long planters. Dumb pussy. You'd think that once he got to the bottom of one that he wouldn't bother with the others. But ohhhhh nooooo. He had to see for himself.

I've never heard of feral cats digging but I've seen him in the backyard a few times poking, biting and pawing the grass. What a strange little cat.

Sigh. So I guess I'll wait a month or so, buy more seeds and try again. All three of the kittens should be about a year old soon, so maybe they'll be a little less curious. There's actually a fourth one that looks like the output from the tabby but I don't see her out much - just a few times at the food bowl.

So i've tried to befriend the chipmunks, Constant problems eating crops, digging deep dens next to the foundation, making a mess and chewing chair cushions etc. Humane traps, too smart, mouse traps, too smart, pellet gun, get one occasionally, Eat hardy little fella.

Fuck every chipmunk on the planet! I had a brand new asphalt driveway poured at my house in CT when we built an addition. The contractors finished in late fall, by June of the following year there were tunnels under my driveway. It was cratering in those places where vehicles would roll over them!

The wife insisted we try all those humane solutions also. DrowningBucket™ was the only solution that worked!

That's one of the benefits of having feral cats - anything the size of a chipmunk is a nice snack. The kittens even chase the squirrels. I guess the adults can't be bothered.
