Given the Russian propensity for pulling shit like Chechnya, this is going to go downhill really quckly unless the international community steps in. Even so, I doubt that Russia "feel like" the international community means diddly squat.

The only reason South Ossetia is in Georgia to begin with is because of the all-corrupt USSR.
They just stuck it as an autonomous republic within the Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic when it didn't really matter because they were both part of USSR. Ossetia was never governed by an independent Georgia.

The US is participating in military exercises in Georgia. This wouldn't be the first proxy war the US has been engaged in with Russia (and the former Soviet Union), starting from the beginning of the Cold War, through the Soviet-Afghan war, in Serbia/Kosovo, in Chechnya, and now in Georgia. How would the US react if Cuban forces attacked Gitmo, and there were Russian military stationed in Cuba doing exercises that led up to an attack? Would you be trying to discredit people who can add 1+1 together to see that the Russians would have some involvement?!

Anyways it seems like a tough situation to be put in. Since it seems they've had autonomy its hard to try to bring them back into the fold. I'm not sure about Georgion politics and how it currently works...but I would hope that a compromise at being an automonous region could work. Maybe get most things save for reserving things for the main government such as international relations (ie: province doesn't send its own ambassadors), currency, and military. That is probably what I would try, and then afterwards slowly condition themselves to see themselves more as "Georgians who are ethnically Russian(is it slav? I don't know)".

I really am disconnected from this whole "Country is an ethnic group" type of thing. IMO people should separate themselves because of that. Maybe it is because in the USA we have such a varied mix.

Of course this information that Georgia went in shelling civilian areas doesn't look very nice...
