That download test is supposed to take 10 seconds... Mine's been running for about 3 minutes now

I have the Verizon 20/5 up and miss my DSL. I don't download and don't notice any difference from my 3/764 up DSL just doing internet stuff (no games). I don't mind that is not faster but it takes an outlet in your house to work. I had 2 outlets in garage and now I have 1 because of FIOS. I was paying $25 a month for DSL and the FIOS isn't worth it yet. Maybe if I DL movies or something in the future. Right now its like having a fast, expensive car stuck in the slow lane.

i can't wait for that to come out west here in phx, az - give cox some competition. i sure would love 2-5Mb/s up to run some game servers for 30-40peeps and actually have it moderated in a good way

We are supposed to be getting our cable upped to 20MB down.
And 768kbps up. Whatever. Seriously.

FIOS is nice with the upload speeds, I wish other services would do the same.

99% of the stuff downloaded by the typical user is either:

1. Slow on the server side
2. Speed-capped by ISP. You think the ISP will let you bittorrent at full speed? Ha!
3. Doesn't need much bandwidth to begin with

So there is not much point to a 20Mbps downstream connection.

What about newsgroups at full speed ?

Sarasota, FL

Their introductory deal is $39.95/month for the first six months and then it goes to $49.95.

I'm paying $34.95/month in Harrisburg PA for my 5/2 from FIOS :\

Okay, I'm paying for the 15/2Mbit service but I'm supposed to be getting the 20/5Mbit service.

Note the URL and check for yourself.

They offer the 20/5 tier to the 15/2 tier users where they face stiff competition from cable. Here in north Jersey they are up against Optimum Online and Comcast and have had the 20/5 promotion for a while now. I have had it for 6 to 8 months now and it has been sweeeeeeet.

It appears the Verizon test is using a tester like this one. Some have issues. Not that my computer's connection will bring them up - but the RT can as it's lanned to an OC12 frame.

Ruby,

According to that test, I get 12.7meg down and 4.7Meg up.
I ran it three times and the speeds were very consistent.

I also noticed the server is located in Virginia.
WTF?

You think verizon, the company you're buying from, is going to give you an accurate speed test?

I'd trust that test you just ran over the verizon server any day.

Time will tell if you ever actually get 2 megabyte/s transfer speeds. When the Ubuntu 7.07 Linux ISO is released hop onto a DVD torrent that's at 65% completion overall or more and then see how fast a download you get. Assuming you're port forwarded, that --should-- be an accurate representation of your transfer speed.

Of course speeds will vary during day/night as more/less people are using the pipe back at the verizon center.

I pay $180/mo for my FIOS 5/30 connection because simply, time warner is getting blown away by it and theres no competition. Back east, Optimum online is killing FIOS and they give the same speed for $50/mo. Ladt i had heard FIOS was going to 10/50 connection out there to compete.

Some say its not worth it.. To me it is. The speed, i use every ounce of it, both directions. it IS the best thing since sliced internet.

I just got FIOS TV and i can honestly say, no more crappy SD content on my HDTVs finally. If you have the means, i highly recommend it.

I honestly don't think I'd need the extra bandwidth with FiOS, but how's the HD content with Verizon? Currently using Comcast HD and I'll just say its a bit lacklaster in terms of actual HD support. Maybe 50 channels at most in HD, rest are digital but still SD.

I had Dish Network before. Their HD content, quality wise, was ok.. Their amount of channels, was sad. I moved to TW for expanded HDTV content. Quality was even better aside from SD quality.

FIOS gave me MORE HD content, BETTER looking HD content and MORE channels SD, including, $30 less. Im very happy and i have HD channels i didnt have before, which is real nice. SD quality is impressive. You can pull down the channel lineup on their site.

Edit: Doh, posted too early.

I wish I had FIOS... just kidding

Download 7402 kb/s
Upload 9934 kb/s

http://www.speedtest.net/index.php (Atlanta, GA server from Triangle Area, NC)

This is while playing an online game and being on AIM. Gotta love my university connection during low-load times...

i am on a 12/1 cable connection and i routinely get 800KB/s+ and during low load times like late at night, i usually get into the 1-1.6MB/s speeds, and this is when i do the bulk of d/l things so all is good for me.

Thanks for the reply and link, very helpful. But sadly that HD line-up looks nearly identical to Comcast's. I was hoping for something that would have all 10 HBO channels in HD, but I guess that's a limitation of the content provider. I find it very difficult to watch shows I miss on the HD channel on the SD channels knowing the difference in quality.

Of course I'm not naive enough to blindly trust the Verizon server.

I disagree with your analogy.

In your case, it's like you have a fast, expensive car with which you can't push the accelerator all the way to the floor.

You're just not using the connection. Try bit torrent seeding Linux distros 3 or 4 days a week at full upload. Geeks everywhere will love you.
