2100+/KX7 doesn't want to cold boot - ideas?

hey all,

i won a 2100+ at the AMD event in Raleigh last night (go AMD!) so i came home and tossed it into my KX7, replacing the Tbird 1.4 that i had in before. well, the cpu works for the most part, but the machine only cold boots maybe one out of five tries, and i usually have to clear the CMOS with the jumper to get it to boot. when it doesn't boot i get no screen image and no beep - just everything spinning up. once i get it to boot though, i can reboot and reset all i want without a problem. only powering off makes it not want to come back on. can anybody think of why this is happening?

btw, what kind of overclocks can i expect out of this thing? it's an AGOIA 2100+ and i'm gonna be water cooling it soon.

thanks for help.

How is your PSU ? What kind and how many watts ? That would be my first guess.

antec 300w psu

that one ran my tbird fine... would it make that big a difference with an XP?

also, once it boots, everything runs fine.

Good deal, I won a 2400+ at Raleigh last night I need a new mobo to use mine. I hope you can get yours working better.

Normally a good 300watt (like Antec) should do the job, unless I have missed some bulletins. What other hardware do you have installed ? The only reason I said power supply, is that once the bios is initialized, and all devices have started there doesn;t appear to be a problem. The greatest current drain is during device startup, and after that levels out, thus my guess on PSU. If you have easy access to a 430 Enermax, you could try that. Also, if you have a lot of hardware, unplug everything except the boot drive and video card(obviously need fans and memory), and see if that fixes the problem. If so, I think it must be your PSU.

Edit: The new XP2100 draws more current than the tbird I think, someone may post the specs, I don't have time to lookk it up.

i do have a lot of other hardware in here. a 10k rpm scsi drive, 7200 rpm ide drive, three cd-roms, and a geforce 4... i know those all draw a lot on the psu. but if it was a power problem, why would it boot and run normally one out of five times? clearing the cmos is the only sure-fire way to make it boot, so far...

Sounds like a BIOS issue, have you flashed to the latest version?

Well the issue could be the power supply because at boot time it initializes every piece of hardware so every piece of hardware is running at full power drain. Once you have the system booted, the cd-roms(and other hardware not being used) can spin down and reduce the power needs. Like suggested I would unplug all the cd-roms and see if that helps. If it does you need more power captain. I hope I won't need more power because I only have a Enermax 330Watt.

Look at it like this:

You know all the components work unless you screwed them up installing the CPU so the problem is either the PSU or the CPU being faulty.

If the CPU was faulty then I don't think you would ever get the system booted.

With that much "stuff", you very well may need a bigger PSU. The reason it works one in five times is probably due to small fluctuations in the incoming voltage, and the possible small random difference in startup times for each of the components. Again, if you want to PROVE that your PSU is too small, unplug unnecessary components, and boot several times. You don't even need to let it go past the post, just make sure it does, and pull the plug. Try this several times. If it works every time, get a new PSU. If not, then I don't have a good suggestion other than to get a new motherboard (I highly doubt that is bad, but maybe somewhat incompatable)
