It depends, if you don't plan on agressively overclocking the 2100+, then you won't see much of a difference at all. If you do get it, even "merely" just setting the fsb to 166 (13 x 166 = 2.17 GHz or 2700+) would pretty much be a sure thing unless you get a "bad" chip. It would probably be worth the performance gain if you currently are not satisfied with a 1700+.

I'm currently running an old 1700+ Palomino (been running on this chip since March of 02). The chip doesn't overclock very well (I'm unstable as soon as I try to pass 1.6GHz) but the speed has been more than enough for me. I'd get a 2100+ to power a new system only because I'd want another system, not a fast upgrade as my 1700+ is just fine for what I do now. Although I've got the feeling that I might change my mind if I taste 2.25+GHz of Athlon sweetness

Doh, just went to a 1700+ TBred A after Christmas! Oh well, 1930 MHz @ 1.7V stable is faster than I need anyway... right?

If you can find the $101 it might be worth it, otherwise you definately don't need to upgrade if you are already pleased with your current CPU. Waiting is probably best if you can, you'll save money to upgrade to more/faster ram and even will get to see what at least Barton can do...

Here is a question for the more experianced o/cers here. Is it possible to burn up a proc by increasing the FSB too high or just by upping the voltage?

Upping voltage without proper cooling.......yes.....FSb?? no. Whatever you do, make sure your CPU core surface has proper contact on the HSF unit and the fan is spinning........

DAyum.....I came back.

Ok thanks for the info. I am going solid 12x190 (2280)@1.7v. I am going to run prime 95 all night and if that goes well I am shooting for 11.5x200!

No, if you press your FSB too high, modern BIOS' will just refuse to POST or they will crash/fail to boot Windows. If you up your voltage, your cpu temps will just increase and you'll crash if it can't handle the speed, but not enough to just incinerate it. As long as your heat sink is properly mounted and a fan is spinning, chances are low you'll burn it up.

Congrats on the overclock . I managed to get my XP 2400+ at 2.5GHz at 2.00 volts. I'm waiting for my XP 2100+ to get back from RMA... hopefully it'll be a T-BRED B .

I wanna get this processor but I wanted to get the retail version. Is AMD ATHLON XP 2100+/266 FSB PROCESSOR CPU - RETAIL BOX 2100+/ 1.736GHz, BOX2100DMT3C a Tbred B or Tbred A?

there is no tbred A for this speed as far as I know. we probably won't see any more of them made either. I'm assuming that is from newegg so if it doesn't say it's a tbred B it isn't. They are usually pretty good with clarifying steppings and such. It should say in the decription somewhere if it's a palomino which it probably is. Just buy oem and get a good cooler and the sky's the limit

I don't think it would matter whether it's a retail or OEM... but I always bought retail AMD CPUs cause I got the better stepping and it would o'clock better. SO I guess you can go and purchase the retail XP 2100+.

I could be wrong, so someone do please correct me.

Why not get the OEM with the Extended Warranty for a year?
