One of my good friends asked me to build him a computer and said "no, go get a dell, it'll be a bit more expensive but if anything goes wrong, you can call them."

He forgot about it for a few weeks and asked again but I gave him the same spiel and offered to help him pick out parts. He gave in and ordered a dell. 4 weeks later, his hard drive corrupted and had to call tech support. They sent a tech out to replace the drive and install from the restore disc.

I told him, he saved himself time because i wouldn't be able to help till for a week and even then, he'd either wait for an RMA from the HDD mfg or buy a new hard drive.

Are you sure that you don't actually hate the guy ? Sending him to Dell ?

I'm in the minority who would happily fix their stuff for free, especially if I'm going to be putting down roots in the neighborhood. I'd just be up front and tell them I don't promise any miracles and if they really get annoying about it "yeah, you know I just don't know what to do here. Might want to take it to geek squad."

1. Problem solved
2. Reputation intact if not increased.
3. Profit.

This. I've helped one of my neighbors out a few times with his new wireless router and his digital camera. He's helped me out when I needed to rip out all my old carpet and padding the day before the installers were installing my new carpet. Another has given me tons of veggies from his garden. And I've only lived here for 1 year so far too. I love my neighborhood!

When I first moved in to my house, my neighbor told me he did fence work. So I asked how much he would charge to put up a fence. He told me to just get the materials and we would do it. Not knowing him very well I rented some tools and proceed it to do it by myself. Later that day he told me that I was doing it the hard way and if I could wait to the following weekend he would bring his equipment and we could knock it out.

I took him up on the offer. On Thursday he stops me and tells me that he had something come up and could not get to it that weekend, but his crew didn't have any work to do for Friday. He paid his guys to put up my fence and did not charge me a dime.

Needless to say I will work on his computer anytime for no charge. BTW that is what neighbors are for.

You live in the middle of the backwoods with a bunch of rednecks. Of course stuff like that still happens!

My aunt called me the other day and wanted to reformat her computer. I charged her $50 and took two weeks to get it done. It sucks to have to do that, but when I use to be prompt about it all her friends called me wanting free work too.

This is why I rarely do computer work for friends or family anymore. When I do, it's either because I'm being paid or getting something I want in return (free babysitting or some other kind of favor).

My uncle is a master mechanic and has won all kinds of awards and trips from Ford for how good he is. He asks for $25/hr when working on family's cars. I always give him $35/hr because I know he's worth it, I know I can trust him, I know he'll do a good job, and I know how annoying it is to have a family member or friend call you only because they want you to fix something for them.

I have absolutely no problems helping people with things that I am good at, because I believe it will come around again. I can't count the number of times that I've needed help, and I don't understand this idea of not asking friends/family for law help, or car help, home repair help, financial help, etc. I mean wtf, are we all supposed to live in a vacuum and not discuss anything with anyone? Do you all hate your job that much that you won't do any of it for a friend?

And I totally understand the flip side, because I've built computers for family and I did become the de facto repair guy. Yeah, I grumbled about having to fix my brother in law's computer, but on the other hand he's given me a few sweet deals on firearm stuff that I know was worth way more than what he wanted from me.

I agree that people should help each other out. As I've stated, though, that's hardly been my experience. With most people it's take, take, take... and on the rare occasion you ask for something, they disappear into the woodwork. Furthermore, you and your brother know each other far better than my neighbor knows me. I can't imaging hitting a someone up for services before I can remember their first name.

Just ask your friends to help you move...they all expect YOU to help when they have to move...but when it's your turn...they're all going to be out of town that day...no matter what day it actually is.

My brother in law has a lot of gear head.
My dad has a lot of electrician.
I have a lot of electronics.

We pass each others' skills around between us freely. And we're sane about our expectations.

I do understand the frustration as I've spent too much time fixing anyone and everyone's PCs and you do get burned out when your number is basically on someone's speed dial and you're troubleshooting a $5 kids game that you've never seen before over the phone that is coming up with an error that you've never seen before.

I had one last week where a coworker brought her computer in from home before asking me if I'd look at it and what not... nothing wrong w\ it. 6 month old dell w\ 3ghz c2d,6gb,750gb, windows 7. spent 5 minutes running ccleaner and cleaning up all the crap in her startup. I think bestbuy does this for 250 or so.

Then sure enough when I take her computer back to her, I have the lady next to her asking me questions about her computer running slow, etc.

if he had offered beer....i would have straight up told him to fill a cooler. ill work for beer...if i can drink while i work and theyre not in a hurry (and wont run out of beer)

because god damn, after having me drunk and working on computers, nobody is going to ask me to do it again.

"Hey Buddy, I here your good at computers, mind coming over and helping us with our networks, we'll offer you no adult beverages but all the soda and pretzels you can eat....

Just be honest. If it takes 5 minutes of your time then it's in your best interest to do it, you never know when you'll need their help someday. If it looks like it will take hours...how about this: Just tell them that! FFS they will understand. They'd be friggin jackasses to expect you to spend hours fixing their stuff for free.
