Hi peeps,
Bit new to this but thought I'd start to try and build my own machine fore a change rather than buying premade ! oh the fun I've had . Got 2140 intel dual core and at present sat at 2ghz just by changing the fsb to 250 but anything above that and the computer just keeps crashing. So what is the next phase for em please as I've read loads of comments on here and other places but can not really do much else. Also need it in lamens terms as uping voltage and so on is understandable but still getting use to the bios screen and learning what everythign means .

I've got:-
gigabyte ga-p31-ds3l
pentium dual core e2140
artic cooling freezer pro7
ez cool 550w
8600gts 521mb nvidia 2000mhz
400gb samsung spinpoint 8mb hdd
corsair ddr2 xms2 6400 800mhz

be great if people can help to a starter

Try going into the bios and uping the V core to 1.41 and start with 300 front side bus setting..

Also keep the ram as close to 800 mhz as possible..Ram should be the last item to tweak..Also dont bump up the pci bus..just leave that alone..

You want to verify your cpu is stable before you mess with any thing else...3 ghz should be your target..anything over that and you are lucky.. Ram is very important...just keep that in mind..

Change your RAM to the 2x setting; that's what Gigabyte calls 1:1. The reason you can't get any higher is because your RAM is crapping out, from you trying to run it too fast. You have to press Ctrl+F1 at the main BIOS page, to be able to change anything to do with your RAM.

Glad to hear it. For the record, you should say what that setting is called. I couldn't remember, and didn't want to have to reboot, just to look-- I've already done my overclock.

Yep, they get awfully toasty with the stock heatsink. That why all (nearly all) of us overclockers spend a bit more money on better heatsinks. And core 0 will always run hotter; it's not only running Prime95, it's also running Windows, your drivers, etc.

edit: Of course, it won't get that hot during "normal" use. You'll probably have 8-10C cooler temps while gaming, doing video encoding, or whatever.

Good to hear you are getting the system to post.. I like to use arctic silver thermal paste whne I do system builds..

As for 61-65 that during a load under stress testing.. Most of the time its not that hot.. Also turn of fan control in the bios.. That way you fan will run max speed..

Also when you setup your case make sure you put some extra fans..Helps to keep it cool..

memory at 1:1 is good.
