I was hoping somebody might be able to reccomend a 22" lcd. I looking to sepnd no more than $400. I would be willing to settle for a 20" if it was much better quality/feature wise. However I like the size of the 22" models. My usage breaks down about so; 50% web surfing, 30% video/DVD watching and 20% gaming. My gaming habits are mostly FPS and RPGs. Id like something that has good response time but don't want to compromise color quality.

there's no good 22" LCD from color quality perspective. Other than that, it seems that 90% of 22" LCDs use same panel form chimei, and remaining 10% are Samsung 225BW.

Either way, for your purpose I think you would find them satisfactory. BestBuy has 225Bw on sale for $350, probably your best choice for that price.

Well, I just bought an HP f2105. It's a year-old model that's 21" and uses a true 8-bit Samsung S-PVA panel. The viewing angle, color quality, blacks, and text sharpness are all fine. The panel supposedly has an 8ms gray to gray response time but THG measured ~22ms using their method. Other reviewers haven't complained about slow response, but I haven't had a chance to test in games yet (and I'm not a big gamer myself). Cost was $363 after rebate and tax from HP online.

I stayed away from the 22" models because they have 6-bit panels and narrower viewing angles. Still, their fast response might be better for gaming. 20" seemed too small for 1680x1050 resolution.

22" is awesome, as tall as a 19" 4:3 LCD but nearly 4" wider. I second the AL2216WBD, it's fantastic for programming, surfing, and games. I've noticed no issues in color or viewing angle whatsoever.

The only downside is that the base is somewhat flimsy, so if your desk is small/wobbly you might want to look at something else. My desk is a huge oak door made into a desk, so nothing can move it, haha.

They now have the AL2232WD up on newegg (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16824009102), and it's probably better in some ways than the 2216. I don't see any complaints about a weak stand.
