Yeah, I've been reading up on them lately as well and the info can be overwhelming. I will point out something to keep in mind as you're looking though that might help.
While 22" displays are an obvious price point when you're comparing size to money, also consider that there are different kinds of panels (like TN, PVA, IPS, and many others). It just so happens that in the transition from 22" to 24" many displays also switch to better panels, which is a major factor in their cost.
There are advantages and disadvantages of nearly all the panels however, so what you want to find is a good review that lists them and decide which ones are important to you before you make your final decision. For instance may gamers will actually prefer the cheaper TN panels because they have faster response times and exhibit less ghosting while graphic artists will prefer more expensive panels because of their color accuracy.
If it matters to you (and I think it should since you will be staring at your monitor every time you use your computer) I would recommend first determining the kind of panel that you want and can afford and then reading specific reviews on the displays that use that type of panel. This info is usually not given by the producer (something like WSXGA only refers to the size and not the kind of panel) but many in-depth review sites have obtained this information in one way or another. These reviews are also helpful for discovering any common problems with a particular monitor and whether or not it is something that bothers you (some people despise minor backlight bleed and some don't even notice it).
Good luck in finding your ideal monitor!
