would it be wise to use win2k on a computer with 224 ram? it's a pentium 2 450mhz and it just died on me... so i got a new hard drive but i dont know if i should install win98 again or win2k... i've wanted win2k for a while ow though, but how will it run with only 224 ram? wat are some of the drawbacks i might experience?

224 is more than enough RAM. After I boot into windows, I use about 85MB of memory. There's still plenty left for other apps and some moderate multi-tasking.

By the way, I had 256 and upgraded to 384 with absolutely no noticeable difference. Even when I scan in huge photos so I think your 224MB should be more than enough.

cool, thanks... it's just that i've heard that u should't install win2k unless u have at least 256 ram. who knows, i might buy another stick soon since it's so cheap.

I noticed a nice boost from 128 to 256 so that statement might be true. But 224 is pretty close to 256 so not a biggy. And you're right, if you find that you need more memory, you can get 128MB for something around $25 shipped which just boggles my mind.

Prior to leaving school, I installed windows 2000 on a friends machine, it was a pII 350 w/ 224 MB of Ram, i would say from this point, it's all about hard drive speed. bEcause of him having a 60gXP win2k screamed like a bat outta hell

hard drive speed? oook... i have 2 5400rpm hd's... my new one doesn't even make a sound... i ran tests on it and formatted it and everything... doesn't make a sound at all, i first thought it was broken because it was so quiet haha... some fujitsu mpg39somethingsomethingsomethingAT

well, but does hard drive speed really matter when installing win2k? it would be the same problem as if i was trying to run win98 if it had a problem with win2k.

Well hard drive speed matters for just about everything. But 5400RPM drives should be fine, especially if they are newer.
