Are mobile LCDs usually worse than desktop LCDs? I have a VAIO GRX (16") notebook and the screen is horrible. The color spectrum is terrible because the contrast is bad. You can toggle the brightness up and down but it doesn't help much. Those notebook screens are supposed to be the latest and greatest from Sony. That screen has nothing on my Dell 1900FP or this cheap Viewsonic LCD I am typing on in my sister's room. I am afraid to buy an LCD from Sony since you can't really tell how well the screen displays colors from the video they have looping on the demo units at BB.

WTF?

Its a 42" plasma. I have yet to see a plasma that is 45".

You can get a 42" plasma in England for £2'500 ($3750) and the Sony 23" costs £2500 cheapest and £2700 normal retail.

The difference is that the 42" plasmas you get for £2.5k have a res of less then 1024x768 until you spend about £3.5k+. So the plasma would kind of suck really.

You can get 1280x1024 on the higher spec 50" but they are £5k ($7.5k) but that res isn't exactly good either.

Staples the lcd on your laptop isn't going to compare to a desktop lcd as it has to run on a battery so it just won't have the brightness. Especially on your one as is a 16" so it wouldn't last long at all if it had the same contrast levels as a desktop lcd.

laptop lcds probably have less powerful lighting. power saving ofcourse, so i bet that affects picture. but many laptops have insane resulution. 1600x1200 on a relatively small screen is just sweet. course those are only top end options, but still cheap when you consider how much a separate screen would cost.

Yeah, mine is definately too high of resolution for my liking. UXGA at 16" is pretty small and there is no way in hell I would get a 14.1" UXGA screen like lots of people seem to want. I definately can't complain about the clarity of the picture but the colors are pretty bad. On a side note, I have one dead pixel but it is very hard to see, I guess it is because it is completely dead (not stuck on a color) and it is really small because of the high resolution.
