Thanks for the deal! Along with the 1 hr specials on the website it looks like CompUSA is trying some new avenues for garnering business. Wonder what else they have up their sleeves?

Just got back from the CrackUSA in Duluth Georgia. I called and they said they had none in stock, PacDig or HiVal. However when I went in they had a stack of HiVals on the top shelf. Low and behold they ring up at $19 and they know the cds are at $0.

Not sure what is behind the PacDig rebadges, but the HiVals at Duluth were Digital Research. I don't know much about them but I am willing to give them a try for $20.

Oh yeah, they had 8 when I got there and 6 when I left. Picked up 2 for my wife and my brother.

Oh yeah -

The HiVals are model # h241040a-15r with a sku of 0876601310

Not sure if that helps, but if someone has a clue exactly what manufacturer that is let me know.

Scored one at lunch today from the Houston Westheimer store. Three or four Hi-Vals left after I nabbed the one. Rang up $19 even. Ditto EtOH's sku and label #s. Digital Research label on top of drive itself. Comes with Nero Express.

Link to digital research site's info on this drive model # on web site matches model # on this page.

Picture on HiVal box does not look like the unit inside. Still, for $19, I'm not complaining!

Thanks for the good deal Sarivol!

My local CrapUSA had no 24x burners period. But they are running an advertized special on the Samsung 40/12/40 burner, for $29 (after $50 MIR), plus you get a stack of 50 CDR's thrown if for free. Not too bad, so I went for it so I wouldn't have wasted a trip.

I thought about the Samsung. But didn't feel like waiting on the rebates.

got one at Brighton, MA. Salesman on the floor knew about it. they had to look it up in order to ring it up. they get email or something likethat every morning about the deals. the common complaint was: "they never tell us about the radio ads"! But the people were very nice. They have a bunch more left. The Pacific Digital that is also for $19 is the 16x10x40. picked up the Hi-val since i take it that it comes with Nero but the Pacific Digital does not.

Also picked up a MS "wireless desktop" keyboard and mouse for $30 (originally $70) after $5 IR + $5 MIR + $30MIR . This last MIR is obtained by calling an 800 number for the Microsoft rebate. It is not in the box or in the store.

Hi-val and Digital Research are brand names of I/O Magic!

Anybody know if this is a decent CD Writer or is the Pacific Digital a better bet?

I/O Magic - MagicWriter = Hi-Val = Digital Research

Review - they rate it a best buy due to the price and the inclusion of Nero 5.5 apparently.

I am trying to assemble a quality system on a tight budget, so I am happy with it.

Much thanks Sarivol!

tell them you heard it on the radio. tell them to look up their email list of rebates. apparently they get email every morning about the rebates. this deal is not adervertised on the flyer or online. the one on the flyer is not right either. there is another one. have them call some of the other stores where people have done it. i think it is a national deal.

Here's the text from the radio ad and the sku's from the store's info:

Going digital, my friends, just got cheaper because now thru Saturday it?s Crazy Price Days at CompUSA. Which means you?ll get prices on digital technology that are absolutely nuts. Like 128 meg of SD-RAM PC-133 for, are you listening? Nineteen bucks. How about an MP3 player? Get it for just nineteen dollars. An MP3 player for under twenty bucks? It?s crazy! An internal CD-RW drive, you got it, nineteen bucks and you?ll get 50 CD-R?s free. Insanity! Got thirty-nine bucks? How?s this? Get 128 meg of digital media or compact flash or a Maxtor thirty gig hard drive. Want more? Trade in an old camera and get fifty dollars of any new digital camera priced two ninety-nine and up. All offers after mail-in rebates and instant savings. See store for details. So if you?re looking for technology, don?t go crazy, go to Crazy Price Days, now thru Saturday, only at CompUSA.

128 MB of SD-RAM PC-133 sku #289572
Hi-Val 24x10x40 Internal CD-RW drive sku# 289997
50 free CD-Rs sku# 286007
MP3 player sku# 290286
128 MB of Digital Media sku#289029
or
128 MB of Compact Flash sku#289027
Maxtor 30 GB Hard Drive #296883

Don't know if this helps anyone...

Can someone tell me how to tell who manufactured my Hi-Val I picked up? Thanks!

check here for the availability of the hivals
aopen 24x is picky about the media
24x pdc are mitsumi and lite-on (lite-on will have smart burn on box, mitsumi will be stickered "new bufferunderrun technology" over smartburn logo)
16x pdc were lite-on, "new bufferunderrun tech" were cyberdrives or accesstek
32x were btc, 32x12x48x were cyberdrive
think that's correct...
good luck!

Pay attention to this in your linked review
I/OMagic sometimes uses different drive vendors during a model run, but the unit we received for review was built around an optical drive manufactured by AOpen.
Then, see my previous post about what my friend and his wife got. They were different, and only one contained Nero. I haven't seen it, yet, but from the physical descriptions, I'd say the one with Nero has a good chance of being a Lite-On.

You can't be too poor to pay attention.

I wish the one with Nero was a Lite-On, but it was a Digital Research. Even if it isn't a Lite-On it overburned a large iso first thing out of the box without any complaints. For $20 I will take it.
