what does it call the drive in device mgr?
also, have noticed that one can type the model number of the drive -- sans name of mfr -- and get info on who makes it
typed in 3212M of pdc -- got btc
typed in 3210A of pine 32x -- got benq
hope this helps, works for me

i think btc oem's for hi-val. what do u guys think of BTC? from previous cdrw hot deal threads, it seems the BTC blows. but hey, for $20 out the door... and if it works, i am a happy camper. btw, there is like 3 more in the edison nj store.

Picked up a few this afternoon. I actually went to the store twice. The first time, I just
asked the sales guy what price the Hi-Val 24x drive came up with in the computer. He
said $59.95, so I assumed the sale was regional and went back to work. Then someone
posted that the sale was in an email sent to stores and was national. So I went back.
The guy who was at the register seemed to not be aware of the sale, but just took
my word for it (!!!) Anyway, he charged me $19 for the 24x Hi-Val drives and 0'd out
a 50 pack of Samsung CDRs for each. The CDRs are Taiwan issue, but are better than
your typical bottom of the barrel CDRs (they have a protective coating on the non-play
side). Certainly they're worth $5/50, so effectively the drives were around $14 each.

I can't argue with that.

The one I opened is a Digital Research drive, manufactured 3/2002. It comes with Nero EXPRESS.
I haven't been able to determine if Express is actually a crippled version of Nero with a simpler
GUI, or if it's good old full-featured Nero with the GUI. Someone somewhere said there's a button
near the bottom left of the Nero Express screen that will take you to Nero "Classic", but I haven't
checked that out yet...

They were out of the 24x Models, so they offered a 16x instead. I took 2 of those because it's still a great deal.
This was in brookfield, WI

I got the drive, but they didn't let me get the CD-Rs with them for free. I tried to explain to the radio ad, but the guy was saying the fre CD-Rs only came with the other CD-RW drives. Then I tried calling corporate and the guy didn't know and couldn't the $19 CD-RW in the radio ad, and when I tried calling back they were closed already.

I don't have a Compusa near me, but could you pricematch this deal to other stores carrying it, ie, IE, OM, OD???

Worked fine in Tulsa, OK after some run around. Floor clerk didn't know anything about it. Went to the Front end Manager and told him the deal. He pulled up radio ads on the computer and verified it. I went and got two burners and he went and grabbed my Samsung CD-R 80 16X's. He then went to the cash register with me and made the necessary adjustments. Walked out with two burners and 100 CD-r's for just under $42. Mine appear to be Lite-On's but the came with NTI instead of Nero.

I showed up at CompUSA as it opened this morning to score one. I go in and there was about 10 Hi-Vals on the shelf. No Pacific Digitals. Oh well. I go ask the customer service kid which CDRs go with the deal. She says the Samsungs. I go to check out. The Hi-Val rang up for $19 so far so good. The CDRs rang up as $17.99. I tell the CSR that it's on sale. I get the CDRs for free. She starts looking through the ad. I tell her it's not in the ad. She keeps looking through the ad. 5 times of telling her it's not in the ad later, she says that it's not in the ad. She then asks the manager. He comes out with the fax and says the CDRs aren't free with that drive. I tell her to ask the Customer Service kid. She comes over and points it out in the fax. Everything is good. How come it's always the most junior employees that have the most clue? I seem to have to go through this everytime I try to get a deal at CompUSA. You would think they would know me by now. The manager in downtown San Francisco does. When the CSR asks him, he just looks over at me and says to give it to him.

This was at the South San Francisco CompUSA. They had a bunch left as of this morning. The Santa Clara one also had 3 there. I drove down seeking a Pac Digital.

Be forewarned for some....

I went to our local CompUsa and there was nothing marked on sale. I took a couple of the HiVal 24x CD writers up and explained that I heard this radio ad...got a mgr and he said that was only for the top 37 markets (those with 4 or more stores in one city..we in Omaha have 1). He ended up giving me 2 16X Pacific digitals for 19.95 each, and 2 spindles of Memorex CD-Rs for free.

Not a bad buy for $43 total, but if you aren't in "a market" you might have to argue for it.

Hey guys, the Compusa in Emeryville, CA had a bunch stacked up above the aisles. I'm guessing about a dozen or so. I bought two myself and had no trouble with the cdr's as well. Great deal even though the drives turned out to be a digital research drives.

I'm scratching my head on this one, why are people getting excited about paying $20 for 24x drive? I didn't know anyone was still selling drives at that speed. I've been posting deals for FREE 32x drive and $5.00 40x drives for a number of weeks now and those were "LiteOns.

BTY : the Hi-val and Digital Research brands are owned by I/O Magic and they sell the same rebadged drives under all three names, so most of the drive will be Benq/Acer drives and some will be mfg'd by AOpen or the hated BTC drives, (if your drive says mfg'd by Top Glory, it a BTC )

If I remember right most of the 24x Pacific Digital drive were rebadged Cryber drives and a few were Acer's and BTC mfg'd drives.

They are out of stock at the Lombard, IL store. The CSR said that they had a bunch this morning but sold out right away.
2 other people were looking for the CD-RW drives at the same time.

i can't believe somebody got the nerve to come up in here and crab like that! totally unprofessional
everybody does NOT want to deal with those FONKY rebates!
right now i'm wrassling with bb and nrny cause they keep shuttling the date of my visiontek rebate
ANY, i mean ANY, of these rebranders can go at ANY time, the bottom of the optical drive (cdrw) has dropped out afaict
qps and visiontek, who next?
and there's not that much of a speed difference anyway -- 40x48x are not 40x48x through the length of the disc! i got a lg 32x that burns 16x cdrs in less than 4 minutes. me take longer to go to the bathroom -- especially if i ate more than one burrito...
$20+tax for a burnproof writer and a cdr 50pk (which usually costs $10 in hd w/o rebate) is TIGHT

hey, for those that got the deal, what is the sequence? school us newbies! these stupid cashiers keep wanting to key the sku in (because scanning gives some sort of error), which is giving the janky price
scanned the 30gb for kicks and it was $79
thanks in advance

Unclebud, here's a little 1-2-3 on how to get in on this deal:

1. Scope out the CDR/CDRW drives section. Make sure they got some in stock or check what other drives they could possibly substitute it for like a Pacific Digital 16x drive.

2. Ask one of their floor guys to check the drive in the back if they don't have any on the floor.

3. Ask salesperson if they know what's going on with a radio sale.

4. If the answer is yes, go on without a problem to any cashier and let them scan it. If the price doesn't come up correctly you got someone to get your back. If the answer is no, ask for a manager or someone that can check up on the daily emails they get.

5. At this point head on over to the customer service counter and use that cashier since it doesn't seem like workers at that particular CrapUsa know anything. Customer service is a better place to haggle down prices or bargain for a substitute becase well that's what they are, customer service. Beats trying to get that dumb high school kid manning the regular cashier line to do anything for you.

6. Don't forget to pickup some blank cdr's during all of this. But make sure you get it after you're in the clear with the cdrw drive.

FYI- The Maxtor 30gb hardrive for $39.00 is a 7200rpm drive. Also, the box on my Pacific Digital says 16x10x40. However, the label on the actual drive says 16x12x40. Not a big difference, but this is just for info. I picked up 2 hd's and 5 cdrw drives for me and a few friends and family at the Wilmington, De store. Manager politely told me when I first got there that they were one per customer. The cashier knew about the special but told me that there were no limits to how many you can buy. I love that location. BTW, they are out of the Pacific Digital drives, but have over 10 maxtors left.
